Ontario -- Fishermen are finding their way in increasing numbers this spring to an Ontario Lake that offers a fish that’s as hard to catch as it is to pronounce The ouananiche — called by those inclined to have trouble with their bridgework landlocked salmon — is the lure to anglers What provides a lure for the ouananiche is the rest of their problem Trout Lake near North Bay is the hot spot now which represents a triumph for the Ontario fish biologists They stocked its waters with ouananiche 20 years ago in an experiment that has just about rewritten the book on the subject since Fishermen have taken about as long to learn to catch ouananiche as it took the biologists to learn whether they could really grow them in Trout Lake’s vast stretches For ouananiche refuses live bait that is he won’t rise to flies and plugs spinners ‘and spoons just don’t appeal to him Then motorboats showed the Ouananiche likes to take way his meals on the run He likes big meals The lure that finally turned out to his racy taste is a streamer fly up to five inches in length The Trout Lake veterans usually troll two at once — one dis rectly in the wash of the dissome propeller another tance back Then in early morning or late afternoon the fisherman heads for quiet water where he can spot ouananiche feeding on the surface Once he’s spotted a fish he plows the boat right in over the spot Ouananiche not only likes his meals fast but loud And when he hits he hits hard The first smash is the last as far as most meetings between a fisherman and ouananiche are concerned The speed of the boat and the speed of the strike combine to break many a line before the angler has a chance to do much about it If the line doesn’t break ouananiche is on his way to demonstrating why his reputation is on the rise He rolls like a muskie dives and sulks like a muskie runs like a tarpon jumps like still-fishe- d -- ’ mo-tro’- And all in 10 pounds or Ouananiche probless of fish ably grows bigger than that but the fly rod and spinning tackle clans haven’t been able to prove it by bringing much bigger ones in Ouananiche’s fame as a sport is relatively new but he’s a Canadian veteran whose ancestors go back to the time salt water covered the country Lake St John in Quebec is his home grounds where he apparently became accustomed to fresh water and found the icy cold feeder streams pouring into the lake a likely place to spawn The transfer to Trout Lake seemed like risky business at the time because that lake doesn’t have the cold feeder streams But it had gravel beaches washed by waves and biologists gambled that ouananiche would find that a fitting substitute for spawning Ouananiche did And a few years sgo when a few fishermen made accidental catches on big streamers the boom was on Nowsdsys the bag limit is one fish 'a day — the first one Ounaniche might stand more pressure but most fisher- Trapped but Not Forgotten Idaho Will Get IRONWOOD Mich (AP) — John Kangas is
