Show Life Standard Examiner 7D Sunday November 26 2000 Hip through cemetery turns up fascinating tales Grounds hold movers shakers and miscreants of Gallatin Valley By JOHN MILLER Bozeman Daily Chronicle Mont - The rumor was Indians were massing on the eastern slope of Bozeman Pass It was July 1867 and Montana's territorial government wanted action Mustering a' militia force in the Gallatin Valley officials prepared for what turned out to be an imaginary’ threat - the Indians never materialized What did materialize however was a drunken quarrel between Pvts Chris Yanson and James Spencer Yanson stuck a Bow ie knife in Spencer who later that day became just the second person to be buried in the Sunset Hills Cemetery on the hill that overlooks present-da- y Bozeman The first Jasper Hallison froze to death six months earlier but neither he nor Spencer have headstones Those stories - and plenty of others - are the stuff of a tour of the historic cemetery led by Bozeman Historic Preservation officer Derek Strahn and Kim Allen Scott the special collection librarian at Montana State University OZEMAN Tantalizing yams Moving from one monument to the next Strahn and Scott wove fascinating tales of the n region’s past from well-know- yams like Nelson Story’s cattle drive from Texas in 1 866 and John Bozeman’s murder a year later in the Paradise Valley to more obscure but no less tantalizing yams about Montana's pioneer women Take the sisters Kitty Warren and Louise Buttner who worked in and operated whorehouses on Bozeman’s hardscrabble north side in the 1880s “Bozeman was a small conservative farm town” Strahn said “But like every other Victorian community it had a district It was thriving red-ligalmost seen as a necessary evil” Buttner committed suicide in 1883 Warren the young protege of Bozeman's most successful madam the “remarkably d Louisa Courselle” according to Strahn’s research lasted another year and a half before she dropped a match into the folds of her dress and set herself ablaze “She suffered a month of intense pain before she died” Strahn said ht kind-hearte- Grains of salt Susan Hunter’s headstone is also in the cemetery with birth and death dates of 1835 and 1929 Scott read from what he described as “a recently recovered reminiscence” that Hunter an Ohio native wrote shortly before her death Along with her husband Andrew Jackson Hunter Susan Hunter lived a transient existence in the Gallatin Valley traveling back and forth between Bozeman and land the family had claimed along the Yellowstone River near Big Timber On the property was a thermal spring - Hunter’s Hot Springs -where the family built a bath One day as Susan was preparing to bathe a Sioux Indian came inside and pulled off his moccasins and blanket before stepping into the water She threw a piece of wood at the Indian The Indian chucked his riding quirt back at her which Hunter caught and then used to whip the Indian about the head and shoulders The it and Hunter d Indian returned to Bozeman in the following days with the Sioux's clothing as her trophy Throughout their tour Strahn d and Scott kept up a banter over just how much stock historians could put in “reminiscences” like Hunter’s The crowd got the point: Pioneers and their descendants often embellished the events of their lives years after the fact making it difficult for later generations to separate truth from fiction In other words Scott said “You have to take the stories of murder with many many grains high-taile- good-nature- factual” he said “They inspire imraa inmaai Register today at R C Willey so you can select items you want for your new home' RC Willey will contribute the first 25°° to your Bridal Registry Account!
