took to get the Cougars’ competitive juices d A week after Michael Smith’s celebrated “shut-up- ” retort to assistant coach Roger Reid after Smith was chastised for not blocking out on a rebound against St Mary’s in the Cougar Classic things appear to be back to normal in Happy Valley Smith splashed in a game-hig- h 25 points shot and three other Brigham Young University play- ers scored in double figures as the 5 Cougars crushed Utah State in Marriott the Saturday night Center When asked if the Cougars’ mood had changed since last week BYU Coach Ladell Andersen snapped back and said “I’m not worried about that stuff It’s better off not to talk about that But we responded pretty well to all that business” Andy Toolson tossed in 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds including six on the offensive end while Marty Haws added 16 points and Steve Schreiner checked in with 12 more in BYU’s fifth straight win over the Aggies The Cougars improved their record to 4 while Utah State suffered its third straight setback in and 3 on the road falling to Greg Houskeeper paced USU 23 points on with a team-hig- h shooting but was limited to just 25 minutes because of a back problem Former Roy High star Reid Newey finished with 22 points but only scored nine during the second half Nathan Grant tallied 12 points before fouling out “I thought I played well considering the week we had and with finals I was glad to move on and get everything behind us Any time you play an game and win it’s a big win” said 96-8- 10-of- long-ter- k) 0-- Smith “I guess I made Houskeeper look good But give him credit He played well and we didn’t think he was that good “We had very good practices this week We took Monday off and worked hard Tuesday and Wednesday I pulled the guys off (to one side) Wednesday and apologized I said I was sorry and that it was bad for me to exhibit that type of behavior and then say things (to the media) in the heat of the moment” Smith said “I’m not going to say that it turned things around But it was nice to get a win and especially one at home” he said “The Aggies played their best game of the year statistically they fought hard and hurt us inside I was pleased with the players’ output tonight but up until five minutes to go it was anybody’s ballgame” said Andersen Utah State didn’t score a point the first 6:11 of the game and quickly fell behind 13-- 0 But the Aggies battled back and tied the 9 and again at 4 score at 5 at before falling behind halftime Houskccpcr's 13 points during the opening seven minutes of the second half enabled USU to are things we’re trying to achieve as a team” 95-5- Scheffler said a team meeting helped clear the air of some bad feeling rooted in some teasing the freshman players had been taking “We needed to develop some team unity” Scheffler said “I think the freshmen came out of the meeting with a more positive attitude They could have resented it “This could have made a sour situation but we seemed to come together tonight I hope it continues” Scheffler said Some of that bad feeling may have ended up on the Utah squad Utes’ Coach Lynn Archibald said “I thought we had a nice game plan but our team seemed to be intimidated” Archibald said “It might have been the arena the players Gene Ready or just being on the road They took certain things away from our players and we weren't comfortable with of individual highlights in his time in the NBA In fact he had maybe one individual career highlight in his time in the NBA That was when he shot with a second t sank a left on the clock to beat the Supcrsomcs last April in Seattle And OR The guy hasn't posted numbers — last season or so far this year — that are going to make Michael Jordan look bad In the 1987-8campaign he X View point following the the Salt Palace Monday night Sloan apparently found out quickly what the “hardest part” of his job can be he had been Jazz head coach for about 84 hours Roth was the victim of the perennial NBA “numbers game” It was time to bring back Hansen who had been on injured reserve since before the season began The only other realistic cut would d have been Jazz reserve guard Bart also in his second year Something had to give The Jazz went with a fifth guard (Ro guard-forwar- d Utah-Mia- bench things could be worse “It was a dream come true just making the NBA" Roth said one day last summer before the reality of a new NBA season — and the fight to retain his job — began “Now it's time to get into the top seven or eight players on the team who are contributing each night” Only one problem with that This week Roth lost his job There it was in your favorite sports section's transactions column: UTAH JAZZ — Asked for waivers on Ro-foe- V foed) rather than an eighth front man (Roth) “We just felt like we needed more security in the guard position" Sloan said “If something happens to John (Stockton) we need some back- up” The Jazz had to do what they had to do It happens all the time in professional sports It happens all the time in life And Roth is glad in a way it happened to him Finally “I just wanted to get it over with one way or another" Roth said this week “All the lingering and worrying about it (getting cut) didn't help anyone I'm happy it ended Now I can go on" Roth played for a national squad in Turkey for two seasons The team finished fifth in the world He played some of last season for the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association The Patroons were last year’s CBA champions But now on a cold December morning here's Roth In Salt Lake
