Naval Depot For Achievement v l By Clint Raymond Navy Supply Depot CLEARFIELD— Service to the fleet to the nation and to the community is the program of U S naval supply depot Clearfield In all three great strides can be re- ported for 1951 Service to the fleet has been stepped up by a rash of new production records showing increased individual and teamwork efforts Contributing to these new records is the amazing increased participation in the Beneficial Sug gestion program From only 12 Beneficial Sugawards to workers in 1950 participation in the pro- gram increased to the point where 103 awards were made in 1951 In 1950 these suggestions were estimated to have saved the taxpayer $2567 in 1951 over $149000 annually This increased participation set a new record for naval supply depot Clearfield and helped the department of the navy win the Beneficial Suggestion award for the greatest incerased participation of any agency of the government Methods Improvement This increased interest may be explained in part by the introduction of a methods improvement program under the direction of the planning department just a few months ago Purpose of the program is to provide the methods which will enable an employe 'to analyze his own job and work out more efficient ways of doing it Purchase of defense bonds also had a sensational upturn at the depot during 1951 Participation jumped from 67 percent in June 1951 t 90 5 percent in the following month — a record 13 5 percent increase in one month never equalled by any other naval establishment This participation increased steadily throughout the year and on Jan 24 1952 passed the 99 percent participation mark with all but about 16 employes at N S D Clearfield enrolled in the payroll savings plan Safety is another field in which naval supply depot Clearfield is continuing to make great strides accident frequency rates have dropped steadily since 1947 when N S D first received the secretary of the navy award for achievements in safety Four Straight Yearn Naval supply depot Clearfield has won this award for four consecutive years 1947 through 1950 and they have reported the lowest accident frequency rate in depot history 236 for 1951 During the e last six months not a single accident was recorded During the entire year approximately 3200 depot employes worked 4621450 e acwith only 14 cidents In 1952 N S D hopes to conduct "Operation Goose-Egg- " — and go a whole year e acciwithout a single dent One reason for this low accident rate is that safety is considered to be 'everybody's business" A new employe is required to attend a safety indoctrination class before reporting to his work station When he reports on the job his superior explains the safety factors directly concerning his work Safety meetings are held regularly in each department or division A thorough driver testing program is maintained on the depot and frequent spot checks are made on vehicles with the transportation garage fire and safety departments participating gestion Ogden's California Packing corporation plant is typical of the west canning industry with numerous factories In the background is the Wasatch range northeast of the city Calpak Adds Fibers to State's Economy It was back in 1917 that California Packing corporation bought five plants in the upper Salt Lake valley from W J Parker and "associates and division to expand Plants at Hooper Star and West Weber were closed in 1921 and products from their areas were trucked into the Wasatch plant at Ogden Established in Ogden First of the "Mountain Men" under Calpak was Lucian Ray of Salt Lake City who managed Utah Packing corporation s its first Around 1920 offices were established in Ogden and were moved after a year to some leased property at Roy time last November and December the safety emphasis shifted to spotlight the need for greater traffic safety on highways and city streets in an effort to help the National Safety council postpone the millionth traffic death and to make sure that naval supply depot employes were neither the cause nor the victim This program was highly successful according to the depot safety engineer as a result of the wholehearted support of depot personnel and the wonderful cooperation of law enforcement officials in both Ogden and Salt Lake City Morale Never Better These and other achievements at naval supply depot Clearfield show that morale and the spirt of teamwork was never better among civilian and naval personnel Perhaps the assignment of the first officer of flag rank to command the naval supply depot Clearfield since it was commissioned in 1943 brought a new awareness to depot personnel of the importance the navy attaches to their work of 'service to the fleet" Certainly Rear Admiral C H Gillilan underscored the importance of the work of naval supply depot Clearfield when he said shortly after taking command: "It is hard for the outsider to understand the enormous contribution to the
