Ferraro had to and did prove her competence and independence Bush had to and did prove his loyalty Indeed he may have won the blue ribbon for the corporate vice president exhibiting the most unbridled praise of his boss “It’s a JOY to serve with a President” But in the end the debate was something of a draw Only someone who has never seen Ferraro on the campaign trail would think she put in her best performance most Americans I " AH HOUR LATE THEN MV OFFICE WASN'T REA V THEN THE RECEh TIOHIST MAPE A MAJOR mSS Ellen Goodman There were of course some touchy moments In the briefings before the co-e- d event the candidates had to gorge on advice about “the gender issue” George Bush was urged to be less preppy and more uh manly but not a bully “I don’t want my mother mad at me” he said Geraldine Ferraro was advised to present herself as commanding but warm strong but not steely and above all else presidential IMS THEN TO TOP IT OFF IN -FORMED THAT MV FIRST ASSIGNMENT IS TO PREPARE A REAGAN CAMPAIGN HOW PIPIT GO? WEIL 1STME-- TELLVOU-FIRSMISSED MV TRAIN ANP WAS NEVER MINP THAT THE WHOLE IPEA IS PREPOSTEROUS WHAT REALLY WORRIES THAT TO I ME IS THAI ACCEPTED I'M ALREADY BEGINNING LOSE THE COURAGE OF MY ATME probably loved his surrogate George Bush Those who are with Mondale felt comfortable with the representative from Queens Neither of them made a mistake And therein lies another tale I don’t know how many women took their seats in front of the television set Thursday night with a case of the butterflies As one woman put it “I haven’t felt this way since my gave a piano recital” There was a palpable concern that the First Woman make it through without a blunder It wasn’t just Democratic women who felt that they had something riding on Ferraro’s performance Ferraro is as she is the first to recognize “standing in for every woman in this country” A week before the debate she said “I must say there’s a sense of responsibility that I have to do what I’m doing and not make a mistake It’s not just for me It’s for every one of us to show that As good as we’re as good men nine-year-o- ld as” There is still that anxiety among American women the fear that every step forward is a risk that visibility makes us vulnerable that there is less leeway for error less forgiveness for the first woman in a formerly male role There’s the terrible perhaps irrational concern that if one woman makes just one mistake we’ve all lost a chance Many women watched the debate with their own peculiar double vision: one eye focused on their own opinions another on what men would think How many shared the rule of the first woman anything: “Above all don’t screw up” Overall these 90 minutes produced a debate between a Republican and a Democrat rather than a Fight between a man and a woman It may not make political history but it does make social history As Ferraro said of the first debate between a male and female candidate for the national ticket “Once it’s done the question will never arise again ‘Can a woman do it?’ So it’s more than me against George Bush It’s much much bigger” And now it’s behind us Washington Post Remember when 20 YEARS AGO October 16 1964 : Communist China joined the world’s atomic powers with an announcement that it had exploded its first atom bomb in the western region of China The announcement came less than 24 hours after Moscow had exploded a political bombshell of its own — the ouster of Nikita Khrushchev Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F Dobrynin said at the White House that the new Soviet government intended to maintain the established policy of “peaceful coexistence” and work for a further relaxation of tensions in the world Cole Porter one of the 20th century’s great composers and lyricists died in a Santa Monica hospital He was 71 Big Bob I did not see where Miss Wells ever said she represented everyone — not even in Utah — no one ever could no matter what religious affiliation She represented herself and what she stands for: everything decent honest true chaste benevolent virtuous praiseworthy and of good report It was commendable that she could state that she had no skeleton in her closet Would it not be wonderful if every person could say that? On the panel juding Miss Wells there must have been several judges and I am sure they did not all if any represent her faith but must have felt she would not put their judgment to shame The statistics you quoted I am sure are correct but not due to persons of Miss Wells’ caliber and were well discussed a few days after by Mr Maurice R Franks LLD of Denver Colo May I assume you read his letter? I not he stated that: “disgruntled SALT LAKE CITY spouses accuse former husbands of sexual molestation of children — 90 percent being groundless and 50 percent vindictive Also 679 percent of physical child abuses are committed by custodial mothers live-i- n boyfriends and their new husbands” — hardly people like Miss Wells He also quoted: “A girl is seven times more likely to be abused if living with her mother than father” Having been trained in the life and social sciences I believe his quotes to be correct!
