survive do not go outside the rules set by authority” said Mrs Derr “That is the way the corporate game is played and Mormon women are just playing those same games” Dr Johnson said if Mormon women want to regain power they must “climb up off their pedestals and come face to face with their individual selves” And despite their differing views on how much power the women do have all the panelists agreed that Mormon women should develop their own individuality Mrs Derr said she sees support for diversity among women from church leades “I have taken heart from President Kimball’s last two addresses to the Relief Society Conference that focused on individuality” she said Dr Johnson referred to Mormon women as actresses in a female drama “The parts are all different but we all desire the same thing — righteousness” Members of the audience asked questions and told the panel how they felt about their lives One woman Virginia Peterson drew thunderous applause for her testimony “I find the gospel liberating but I find the system that preaches it sometimes sufficat-ing- ” said Mrs Peterson She explained she is torn by her feelings for the church She said her natural skills and talents have been developed by the Mormon Church but at the same time she has been denied many privileges and advantages Another member of the audience Marilyn Crawford said she does not feel constrained by the church policies and she said women are partially to blame if they do feel limited “If Mormon women have been stereotyped they must bear some responsibility” said Staff Mormon women are currently a hot topic for the media There are books about their “plight” and television shows about their “depression” And through it all the public is presented with a stereotyped image of an industrious woman in a frilly pink apron who looks like Marie Osmond and lives like Mother Hub- bard Experts say this kind of stereotype can be damaging to the women encouraging feelings of guilt and dissatisif action During a panel discussion Friday at the University of Utah’s Women’s Conference three Mormon women with divergent views on the role of women within the LDS Church talked about the image of Mormon women “There is more than one way to be a Mormon woman” said Sonia Johnson chairman of Mormons for the Equal Rights Amendment Dr Johnson said Mormon women must learn to support love and believe in the diversity of one another She said many women in the church want more of the power and decision making but they won’t achieve it until they can learn teamwork The panel was entitled “Mormon Women: Three Perspectives” and each panelist brought a unique viewpoint to the discussion In addition to Dr Johnson there was Marilyn Warenski a former Mormon and author of “Patriarchs and Politics — The Plight of the Mormon Women” And rounding out the panel was JillMulvay Derr a research historian for the LDS Church Much of the discussion centered around the power of women within the church Mrs Derr said from a historian’s viewpoint there have been times when Mormon women had great power She cited women’s leadership of the Wheat Storage Program and Social Services Program as two examples And Mormon women had a very influential role in the 1870’s when the state was experiencing rapid growth she said “I feel as a Mormon woman I have a rich heritage of diversity” said Mrs Derrnot feel But Ms Warenski said she does women have that same power today She said the majority of Mormons today are because their religion stresses to obedience the patriarchy “Even Brigham Young said obedience was the first law in heaven” said Ms Warenski She said church leaders like to point out that Mormon women were the first to have suffrage but she feels if 19th century church was leaders had decided that would have feasible fought they economically just as hard against it too Mrs Derr said it is easy to say that Mormon women have never had power She said it is true the women put themselves in a position of obeying the priesthood but she said that kind of behavior is the same inf any anti-femini- st non-suffra- ge the per acre density may be excessive “However the commission at this time would restrict consideration to the appropriateness of the zoning” he said Mr Bowman said a number of residents attending a planning commission hearing to object to the rezoning on the basis of overcrowded schools the transient nature of renters and excessive traffic on Canyon Road Apparently one factor that prompted a majority of the commission members to recommend approval of the multiple housing complex is the “severe topography of the site which renders it incompatible for a single family subdivision 'SECOND TRIP' to “second trip around” for the Referring the petition Wes Goldsberry asked “what’s the end of the road for this? “Do wre have to keep watching this thing forever?” he asked Mayor Dirks said “unfortunately that could be true “Any citizen has a right to petition the council at any time and as often as he wishes” Mayor Dirks said 17-un- it Candidate's Goal: To Maintain Quality PLAIN CITY — A Plain City Council candidate said today his major
