"character assassination” a televised report that Barry was hospitalized for treatment of a drug overdose in 1983 WUSA-Tsaid Monday that it had obtained a police report quoting a Howard University Drug Abuse and Addiction was interviewed twice by police investigators in June 1984 has said his hernia the station said “When Mayor Marion Barry was hospitalized his illness was the result of an overdose of drugs (cocaine) that occurred while he was in the company of a female companion who also overdosed” Gullattee told police according to the report “Barry overdosed a second time however he was taken to the District of Columbia General Hospital for treatment” she was quoted as saying The station did not say how Gullattee would know about treatment for a drug overdose at another hospital Barry was taken to Howard University Hospital by ambulance Sept 23 1983 complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath after a party with friends at a Washington hotel Initially doctors feared the mayor had suffered a heart attack but a mayoral spokesman later told reporters that Barry had been hospitalized for a hiatal her- nia an abnormality of the digestive tract where part of the stomach provided drugs for the mayor The US attorney’s office has investigated but no drug charges have been brought against him The Washington Times today quoted sources as saying Barry was hospitalized two
