After a brief conference the board went into executive session and the hall was cleared. The northern republican committee now consists of Lteardsley, Illinois'; Eugene Male. During the executive session the parish returns are placed on the table where sit the republican and democratic committees, and they are invited to examine and see whether or no they have been disturbed or tampered with. If these are correct the members of the board siga and approve them. Judge Spofford, in behalf of certain candidates, filed a protest against being excluded from the room during the canvass of the returns, and against secret sessions. Counsel for the United Siats supervisors filed a protest against the exclusion of the supervisors, basmg the protest on the act of Congress di reeling them to remain where the ballot boxes are from ttie cloe of the poll till the ballots are counted They also quoted from the opinion of United State Attorney Beckwith of Octobtr 13th, 1872. in support of their position Protests were also filed by the counsel for candidates for office agaioBt a secret council. The Democratic candi dates also protested on behalf of the Democratic electors not named on the tickets used in the 14th Senatorial District The ticket contained the Dames of W P Kellogg. J. H. Birch. Oscar Jaffriaa and no others. Counsel pro tested agninst, first, the counting of said ballois which have not been cast in favor of said Joseph and others named, for any other electors, except tboe fpe oially named upon said t;cets or ballots; 2d the permitting of returns from said parishes to stand, especially of Ibeiia and St. Martins.thowing all such ballots to have been cast for said Joseph, and others, they being in saiS respects false and fraudulent, or to be considered before this body, and said votes to be counted for any electors except eaid Kellqg, Barch and Jaffrian, whose names only are on fail ballots. The protest is ttaeed upon grounds as follows: That the title to the position of elector can be derived enly by the vote of the people, and no vote can be given and counted except when placed in the ballot box: that electors were chosen under the laws of the State, which requires that the names of persons voted for and the office shall be accurately specified on the ticket. From the Nanaimo Free Pree.1 About twelve o'clock on Saturday night the whistle wf .the Wellington colliery sounded an alarm, ring to fire having been discovered in the Wellington mines. On examination, it was fouud tttat the coal on each side of the upper elwpe near the furnace was on fire. The lire continued to increase in spite of the efforts made to stop it, and on Sunday the flames burst up through the cave in front of the office. At one time it was estimated that the column of flame was at least 1 $0 yards high, aud roared lik'e a vast furnace. This, however, was soon smothered out. Smoke coming up through the bin of eoal at the mine's mouth it was thought advisable to move it, and men were busily engaged in doing so on Sunday and Monday. All gther efforts to check the frre having failed, oa Monday morning the work of walling in the fire, by building a brick wall below the place where the fire exists, was commenced and pushed forward with all possible speed. Yesterday morning all the apertures, except the mouth of the slope having been closed up, steam was injected into the mine from largo boilers at the pit head, and at nightfall the fire was eo much Bubdued that miners went up and down the main slope. Ia the workings on each side of the slope, however, large bodies of fire still exist, but the proprietors are sanguine that in a few days the fire Youths9 and lions' Clothiua and Underwear.
