The suggestion was made, not with my knowledge or consent, that your committee, in order to tie justly constituted,, should comprise in uiMiiiou to the six members appointed by Mr. Beecher, .ix others appointed by To no such proposal would I myself. hive consented, for I hare never wanted ny tribunal whatever for an investigation of this subject. Neither your committee as at present censtituted, nor an enlarged committee ou the plan just mentioned, nor any other committee of any kind, could iu and of itself huve persuaded or compelled me to lay before you the lacts contained in the preceding tlutement. Distinctly be it understood that these facts had uot been evoked by jour committee because of any authority which I reccgni?.o in you bb a tribunal f inquiry, nor would they have been yielded up to any other committee or Voard of reference, however constituted, except a court of law; but on the I have divulged the above statement solely because epenly published lemands for it were made diremly to cne by llev. Henry W. Beecher, aided and abetted by Mrs Elizabeth R. Tilton. These two parties, aud these alone, and your Sommittee, have by their action prevailed with me. No other authority r influences, except a court of law, could have been powerful enough to extort from me the above disclosures. For tue sake of one of these parties gladly ou!d I have continued to hide these et in tie future as I have incessantly s'riven to da in the past; but by joint "ctiou of Beecher and Mr?. My regard lor Mrs. Tilton was perfectly well known te my When family serious difficulties sprung up in her household, it wus to my wife that she resorted for counsel, and both of us acting from sympathy, and as it subsequently appeared, with out full knowledge, gave unadvised counsel which led to harm I have no doubt that Mr. Tilton found that his wife's confidence and reliance upon niv judgment bad greatly increased, while nis liiKuence bad diminished. In con sequence ef the marked change in his religious aud social views, which were taking place during those years, her mind was greatly exercised lest her children should be harmed by his views. which she deemed virtually false and I was suddenly and rudely dangerous. aroused to a reality of tbe inibeuiiiuir langer by the disclosure of domestic distress, of sickucss perhaps unto death, or a likelihood of the separation and scattering of the family, every member '1 be cf of which l had tenderly loved. feci on me at the discovery of the state of Mr. Ti!ton'8 feelings, and tbe condition of bis family, (surpassed in sorrow and excitement anything I bad ever experienced in my life. That my presence, influence and counsel bud brought to a beloved family sorrow nnd alienation, gave, ia my then state of mind, poignancy to my suffering which 1 hope no other man may ever feel Even to be suspected of having offered, under the privileges of a peculiarly sacred relation, indecorum to the wife and mother, could not but deeply wound any one who is sensitive of the honor of womanhood. There were peculiar reasons lor alarm in this case, on other grounds, inasmuch as I wug theu subject to certain malignant rumors, and a flagrant outbreak iu the family would bring upon them tbe ndded injury detived from these shameless falsehoods. Believing at that time that my presence and counsel had tended, however unceremoniously, to produce a social catastrophe, represented as imminent, I gave expression to my feelings in an interview with a mutual friend, not in cold, cautious, words, but eagerly taking tbe blame upon myself, and pouring out my heart to my friend in the strongest language, with exaggerations and Hud I been the sorrow. impassioned evil man Mr. Tilton now represents,! should have been calmer and more prudent. A full statement of the circumstances under which this memorandum was made I shall give to the investigating That these apologies were committee. more than ample to meet the facts of the case is evident, in that they were accepted, and that our intercourpe resumed its friendliness, that Mr. Tiltou subsequently ratified that iu writing, and i bat he has continued for fwur years, nnd until within two weeks, to Is it eonceivable live with hie wife. that if the original charge had been what is now alleged, he would have condoned the offence not only with tbe mother of his children, but with him whom he believed to have wronged them? The absurdity as well as the falsity of this story is apparent when it is considered Mr. Tilton now alleges that he carried this guilty secret of his wife's infidelity for eix months, locked up ia his own breast, and then he di vulged it to me only that there might Mr. with me. be a reconciliation Tilton has since, in every form if iangUHgc, and to a multitude of orally and in written statements, and in prioted docti nen s, declared his faith in his wife's purity. After the reconciliation of Mr. Tilton with me, the consideration of propriety and honor demanded that tbe family troubles should be kept in that seclusion which domestic affuirs have a right to claim as their sanctuary, and to that seclusion it was determined that they should be confined. Every line and word of letters my private and confidential which have been published is in harmony with the statements which I now make. My published correspondence on this subject comprises but two elements, vii. : The expression of my grief and my desiro to shield tbe honor of a I do not propure and honest woman at this time contest and to analyze pose the extraordinary paper of Mr. Tilton. Butthere are two allegations which I cannot permit to psss without special notice. They refer to the only two inci deuts which Mr. Tilton pretends to have witnessed personally.
