We havo met with but little prejudice against our people; In our travels we have found a few that belonged to the church in thedaysof our exodus from Missouri, the most of them are Infidels. A few believe in Mormonism, or say they do, but think they can live their religion here, as circumstances have prevented their gathering with the Saints. ' Success to the Jc.scnoif. ' W. 0. Child. Yours truly, ' St. Locjs, Mo., Dec. 1st, 1871. Editor Oupen Jcnctiom: doubt some of your Dear Sir: many readers would like to bear how 1 hear tbe missionaries aro doing. from quite a number of them. They No are treated with kindness, but there are a very smalt number who desiro to receive the truth. I have had a long conversation with nearly all of the general passenger and ticket agents of tbe different 11. Ii. routes, South and Kast of Omaha, and they all express themselves highly indignant at the course of our Federal in Utah, they admitted that they had all been predjudiced more or less against our people, but acknowledged they had received their information n from sources entirely. There had been no arragements made east of Omaha, in regard to reduced fares, with but one ' exception, viz. the Chicago and North Western, and that was only to Chicago, I saw how the thing stood. The men that sell K. 11. tickets cannot reduce the fare to any point, unless special arrangements are made by the General Passenger Agents, and several of our people paid full fare to St. Louis and other points south. I have assumed the responsibility of trying to learn the most direct routes for our missionaries, and making thi arrangements for all of our people to travel at half fare. I understood before leaving homo, that all a missionary had to do was to produce his papers and get his ticket at half fine, but I found 1 was mistaken when I got down here. Now I would recommend all traveling south to come by the Kansas, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs 11. H. to St. Louis, via North Missouri Railway. (It is a through ticket, first class from Counoil Bluffs to St. Louis for $10). And then via Ohio and Mississippi K. R. to Louie-vill- e or Cincinnati, or most any other point south or cast. I made arrangements with Mr. Hale, General Passenger Agent to put any of our missionaries over the route (first class) at half fare. And also any person returning with them so that they are indentified by our missionaries. I do not know if I have done rig t or not, but I have done no harm if I have accomplished no good. It has opened a door to me to make a statement of affairs as they exist in Utah, and I have Improved every opportunity. Respectfully, otll-cia- ls . We have visited places of note, and representing ourselves as "Mormons' and niakiiig our known, we have been received with marked kindness, the officers being free to listen, as t' ry say, "to the other side of the question," and as free to impart information on those matters which would benefit tH, and win n we say good bye, it is, "we wi- h your people well." and they press us to call Hit'iin and talk to them.
