A terrible explosion occurred this evening, at the works of the combination rubber factory, 427, 429, and 431 west 24th street, resulting in the death of three employees, named John Demming, Harvey Roc, and one whose name could not be ascertained. The accident was caused by the explosion of the heater, used in preparing the rubber. It was an iron cylinder, 25 feet long, and 5.J in diameter. At one end of the cylinder is an iron door. The raw rubber is put in at the door, which is closed, and the cylinder is then filled with steam. The cylinder was new, and being tested.
