Wednesday Morning, March 1, 1871. Ll... - I tall Southern ISailroad. A bill has deen introduced into Con gress by Senator Sherman, "Granting to the Utah Southern Railroad Company a right of way through the public Ian U for the construction of a railroad and telegraph." The bill was referred to the Committee on the Pacific Railroad and reported back by Senator Howard with It gives to the slight amendments. of the way front Salt right Company Lake City to Tayson, with branch lines to the mouths of Big and Little Cotton- woods, to the exrtciit of two hundred feet on each side of the rond, to take from the public lands adjacent to the line material for ils eeriKtrirction, and when It has been completed to I'ayson to ex tend the line to the Southern Line of the Territory, on condition that they ihall construct at least fifty miles of the road every year until it is completed. This bill will, in all probability, pops both Houses without much opposition, and as the company is composed of men of capital, brains and determination, we may look for the completion of the road to Tayson at an early date. This is what we want railroads and the telegraph to every part of the Territory. Swift communication, eay transportation, ititelligcuce flashing back and forth, the products of the north exchanged for those of the south, and mutual interest and interchange of ideas binding us closer together as the model commonwealth of the world. Wholesome Hints lo Pa- well trained troops of Germany, King William set his face like a flint toward Paris. Neither his triumph nor his rewould be complete without the actual occupation of tho French capital, so France must swallow this bitter pill and the less resistance she offers the better it will be for her. An outbreak of tho excited Parisians would accomplish nothing but evil for the nation. A few Germans might be killed in the melee, and the price of their blood would cost France further sacrifices as great as those she is now compelled to make. Wo hope to hear that tho voico of authority has been respected and that Germany has no further pretexts for extortionate de mands on a prostrato nation. venge Pretty Good. Messrs. pareuts desire that their children should be educuted. They con-idit a duty to send their children to school. Some parents seem to think e that is all that is necessary. They them with neither books, nor writing materials, still they expect their young folks to learn, and lay all the blame on the teacher if the children do not make the desired progress. This is extremely inconsistent. School books cheaper than they were in old times and almost everybody by proper cxer-tio- u can obtain what is licccsaary, yet a a visitor to our district schools, would find very many of the scholars who have no opportunity for study, having to bor-oor "lwok over" a companion's book while standing up in the reading class. Another great drawback to the progress of scholars is irregular attendance. Parents are not sufficiently strict in seeing that their children attend school Nothing but sickness or regularly. some good and sufficient cause should be permitted to detain them at any time from school. Scholars frequently leave school at the end of a quarter without having advanced a step, in consequence f being kept away or allowed to stay away more than half the term. parents expect their children to advance in knowledge, they should send them regularly to school, provide them with the necessary books, encourage the teacher by prompt payment of his dues, 'eml exauiMie the juveniles to see what progress they are making in their studies. Moro on this subject another time. , All good er pro-Tid- art-muc- w 'It Strike. ' There has been a strike among the miners at the friggs coal mine on the Boulder Valley Railroad. The men were paid $1,25 per ton' to take out the coal, but com plaints having reaohed the proprietors from various points that a great deal of dust was mixed with the coat, they requested the miners to screen to do without exit ' This tra pay although" they earned from five to seven dollars a , day. A . few ringleaders influenced the rest of the men, work was "suspended and a demand made of fifty centsper ton extra for screening. " The Company refused the demand and seat to Deatir and hired other miners, but the old1 hands' resolved themselves inter aii organized mob, and by threats m! intimidation drove off the new men. Last Friday Sheriffs Brush and Coolt with six men went to the scene of the disturbance, with warrants for the apprehension of the They found the miners ready for a fight, bug sifter waiting- 4 the cars awhile the mob scattered, when the Sheriffs and posse sallied forth and succeeded in aapturing twelve men, whom they placed and took to EvanB, where in a box-ca- r tried for riot.
