Haturday Morning', April SO, 18T0. Big lloru. ' The Big Hern Expedition is now exciting considerable interest; we therefore give our readers a few particulars on the gribject. The Rig Horn range of the Rocky Mountains in situated on 108 of west lung, and between 43 and 4.V of north latitude Its name arose from the discovery near by of an immense pyramid of elk horns, twenty yards squiire and over aixty feet high, by a party of Hudson's Ray men, on their way to Santa Fe in 1849. The Rig Horn mountains are divided from the Wind River mountains nd the Rlauk Hills by Wind River on the west ami Rad Water Creek on the eoutli. The country which takes its name from the mountain range, is abqut '''') mile in length and ! miles in width, containing several valleys, well watered and timbered, and giving indications of exceedingly rich mineral deposits. Towder River, Crazy Woman Creek, which empties into it, Coal Creek, Little nil Big I'iuey, Goose Creek and Reno Creek, are all fine mountain trenms, running through green valleys, which are said to be astonishingly fertile, and bordered with splendid groves of timber. Tlie same is all of Black's Fork, the Two Rose-budStillwater and Big and South Bolder, streams running between Big Horn and Yellowstone, well stocked with fish. iAlmost tho entire surface of tho country is reported to bo underlaid Vith a strata of coal which crops oui in every direction. Wonderful stories have been told of 1lio richness and extent of the gold deposits in this district. Many of these reports have come from Indians; but the country has been explored pretty extensively, and several ampanies Lave prospected for the precious metal, who lave invariably reported good "colors" and "prospects" on nearly every mountain stream, and a few have declared that the country was one vast deposit of , s, - The great hindrance to mining eper-aliois the hostility of the Indians. The Big Horn couutry is the great Sioux htnting ground; ami they declare their determination to resist all encroachments upon it by the "pale faces.'-Morthan one company who have disregarded the warnings of the savages, have paid their lives as tho prico of their rashness. The rumors concerning tho immense mineral wealth of the district, strengthened by ho lato scientifio report of Dr. Lailtau, liavo attracted the serious of tho leading mintLi of Wyoming and Colorado, and worked on the minds of several frontier men, until they have become' determined to mako a bold stroke for fortune. A short time since, CkiL Murrin organized a company at Cheyenne to brave the redskins and go out and make an attempt to settle the country. But the news reaching the enrs of the Government at Washington, T rest ' Grant issued an order to Gen. Augur, Commander of that department, to' atop the expedition, and if necessary to use force to prevent the contemplated riolatioa of the rights of the Indians, which was calculated to provoke a general Indian war. Meetings were held at Cheyenne however, at which the right of the people to occupy and possess the Big Horn country, was discussed and maintained, and Chief Justice Howe was dispatohed to Washington to use his influenoe to obtain a change of policy. What influences the Judge brought to bear does not trantqdre, but his mission proved successful, and instructions were forwarded to Gen. Augur countermanding tho previous orders; whereupon Col. Murrin issued the following notice : ns ' Offlco of the Big Horn Hills Mining and Exploring Expedition. Cheyenne, W. T., April Hth. The Big Horn "Expedition will start from here the first week in May. Each man will require $75 to provido himself with four months, provisions and transportation of the same. Railroad fare and upwards for parties of twenty-fiv- e is reduced te $87 per man from Chics go to this point. P. II . Hall, Assistant General Stipcrintendant of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, at Chicago, will issue tickets at the above priee to all parties coming west to joiu this expedition. The rendezvous at Chicago Is at the Union Pacific House, situated opposite the depot of the C, R. I. & P. R R. Tho Winchester carbine is the arm recomended; cost $32 here, A twelve-poun- d howitzer has been provided for the expedition, with ammunition for tho same. Parties wishing to be mounted can be providod here at $100 for a good pony. Many will go on foot with the trftin, and thereby save the oxpenso of a horse. A com-jle- it outfit eau Lk purchased here very . ,.i Farror, Sec. Notwithstanding the efficiency of the organization those who march ont on the Big Horn Expedition will run a big risk. The Indians have already shown this spring that they are in a bad humor, and the probability is that they will gather in thousands when the intentions of the expedition become known, and will wage a bitter and relentless warfare against every member of it. That a vait region capable of profitable cultivation and enriched with valuable minerals lies undeveloped in the Big Horn country, is doubtless an fact; but that district is the property of Hie red man, and his rights ought to bo regarded and respected. Before any movement is permitted toward tho possession and settlement of the country, an equitable arrangement should be made with the owners of the soil no matter what may bo the color of their skin. This is the best policy because it is juHt and right; if it is followed, the country wiil be opened in its proper time, and many lives will be saved which will otherwiso be sacrificed to tho red man's revenge ami tho white man's greed for gold. Itrnlal Murder. It becomes our unpleasant duty to reeord the perpetration of a foul and horrid deed within tho limits of our orderly and peaceful city. Yesterday morning, Mr. Edwards, of the Railway Hotel, requiring the services of a negro woman, namod Susan Jones, who occasionally worked in his laundry, sent two persons to request her Sho had taken up her attendance. abode in a tent near the Weber river,, opposite the IT. P. freight station. Her tent was furnished with a bed and bedstead, a stove, and a few other necessary articles which s.io had obtained of a Mr. Farley, and she gained her living by taking in washing, when not employed at the hotel. On reaching the tent an awful scene met the gaze of the horrified messengers. The ncgress lay dead in her bed; the pillow and bed clothes were saturated with blood; her head was frightfully mashed and tho Drains were protruding. The police were eoiumuaicated with and were quickly on tha spot. On scorching the tent it was discovered that, the door being locked, tho murderer had cut an opening for entrance with a knife; an iron pin, which proved to be a C. P. coupling iron, covered with blood, lay on the floor. There was no appearance of any struggle having taken placo, but the unfortunate woman must have been murdcrod in her sleep. A small trunk, la wkich she is said to havo kept her money, was missing, aud tracks were traced from her tent to the banks of tho river, where a small brass padlock was found. Several men were sent to hunt up tho tracks, but they were unsuccessful in tracing the murderer. Cqjoner Fifo held an inquest on the body, in the U. P. freight warehouso, at one o'clock p.m., which was adjourned till four o'clock. From the evidence given at the in- Correspondence.
