Barker lectured in the Third Ward Schoo'. audiences on Wedand nesday, Thursday Friday evenings. The principal points which the lecturer wished to establish were that the sun, moon and 8 tars which wo see in the heavens are not the actual bodies, but mirages or optical illusions; that the sun we seo is only about 4,000 miles distant; that Kpaco is occupied with "celestial water;" that as sand, clay, lime and saline matter lie in the ocean's bed, so oiygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, &c, are grosser elements iu our atmospheric ocean, lying next to earth. In the House of Lords, Lord Chcuisfbrd introduced a bill to secure the better observance of the Sabbath. It restrains, and in some cases entirely prohibits, trading on Sunday. Lord C'henisford said the bill was intended to cluck tbe growing evils. He read static! ics showing that over ten thousand thops were kept open on Sunday in London alone. The Bishop of London spoke in support of the bill. Earl Morley signified that the bill had the approval of the government. The Lord Chancellor thought the bill would have the effect of depriving laborers of the recreation to which they were entitled on Sunday; and he doubted the wisdom and efficacy of the measure. The bill had a second reading in the Commons. The commercial treaty between Austria nnd Great Britain is ratified by both governments.
