Show The Montana Trade. She (Dgtktt function. uhlished every WEDNESDAY and SATURDAY, by the Oodem Publuuixii Cohpant. FRANKLIN D. RICHARDS, Editor. C. W. PENROSE, Associate Euiton. H3DEX, UTAH. Wednesday Morning, May 4, IS70. Exclusive. people have the Bam of being very exclusive. They do not mix so familiarly with outsiders as some of the said outsiders wish them to. 'Mormon" society is not open and free r, to every and strangers who for in our Territory, a time may sojourn are to some extent shut out of the famU y circles of the old settlers. There t a dividing line between the "Mormons" and the "Gentiles." The antagonism of their creeds is the real tause of this division. The "Mormons" have faith, hope, anticipations, and objects in view which are entirely different from those of the "Gentiles." Their in-- v terests are diverse, and the goal of their earthly race lies at the end of opposite roads. Hence, thorough union of feeling, and perfectly free social communion is inconsistent and impracticable. But the impossibility of the Intermingling of the two elements docs not necessitate per-- , sonul hostility. Friendly feelings, bas-- d on the "agree to differ" principle, may bo entertained and cherished hough closer relationship may be undesirable. As a community with a mission taper-foria the world, we cherish, enmity to no portion of the race, but entertain kindly feelings for, and a desire to benefit all mankind, Jew and Gentile, white and colored. But good wishes, liberal sentiments and a universalian spirit can be manifested and exercised witheut close connection and family intercourse. A nan may have the kindest feelings and greatest respect for another, and yet aot be under any obligation, oa principle r otherwise, to introduce the- individual to his household, or take him into the bosom of his home. Do those who would like to sea the "Mormons" throw open their doors to strangers, and be hail fellows well met, with persons who have no interests in common with ours, bii us welcome to their habitations and make public to us Ike privacy of their family circles! Guess not. The fact is, the "Mormons" have, in instances, been teo hospitable and many ( too confiding with strangers, as they have learned by experience. How many of our people have taken' vipers to their bosoms, who, when warmed and cherished have turned and stung them ia the most vital part. How tuany, who have trusted to the seeming boner of fair spoken and well behaved gentlemen," have been betrayed and plunged into the deepest woe through the loss of a gem from the fumily crown, plundored and then thrown aside into the mire of the world by a rotten-hearte- d scoundrel! ftrangers feel indignant sometimos because our wives and daughters are vearned against forming acquaintances with "Gentile" men. Cut are not such warnings wise and proper ? Should not every respectable man wish to be the judge as to who is a proper acquaintance for his wife and daughters ? The great bulk of outsiders in our midst are transients. At any rate, Utah is not their permanent home. They are here And it they may be gone man a said of be among many might them, ye know not whence hecoineth nor whither he goeth. Too much caution cannot be exercised in regard to the acquaintances formed by our children. Not raised in an atmosphere of lies, they are naturally credulous, and their minds and are a fine field for a smooth-tongue- d practised deceiver to work upon. A family close to town, only a few days since, has been thrown into sorrow and distress by the abduction of a young and trusting girl, who, disregarding her father's advice, listened to the clandestine whisperings of a scoundrel. True, he bos married her after a fashion, but in a way that is regarded by us as no marriage at all. And such marriages, In a majority of instances, have proved merely a convenient step to the accomplishment of the worst desires, as the poor dupe has generally found when her "husband for tijne" has lied and left her to shame and trouble. Yes, let us be exelusive. Exclusive of home free from the the sanctity Keep the polluting touch of the libertine and the stranger's betrayer. Be jealoufi of close approach, whose antecedents and real character are among the great unknown. Guard well the priceless jewels which Heaven has placed in our care, and promptly doal out justice to the social thief who robs us of a single household gem. Courtesy, fair dealing, and kind treatment to all, but close companionship, social intercourse and family friendship with none but the tried, the tested and the true. The "Mormons" new-come- . ' m Main Street has teen enlivened (lu ring the lat few days by the arrival and departure of teams with freight for Montana. A great number have come' in from Cache Valley. Yesterday a fleet of T'Frairio Schooners" rolled out to the North in the old style, four yoke of cattle to a wagon, loaded to the bows, the sunburnt teamsters cracking their long whips, and the dust flying in clouds. There is a large camp of mule teams nsar the Depot, loading direct from the cars, and a pile of goo.ls is stored up in the warehouse awaiting transportation northward. Here is a good opportunity for some of our folks who have teams running on the range to make a little cash. Mr. D. 0. Culder is the gentleman to apply to, at the Utah Central Depot. He offers $o.oO and $G.OO per hundred pounds from Ogden to Montana. We are glad to see this return, to Ogden as tho outfitting point for the Montana trade. This is the right spot. No other place in northern Utah has such advantages for the business. It is the terminus of the U. P. R. R., everything necessary for outfits can be here cheaper and in greater variety than at any place farther north, the route from Ogden is preferable to others, and taking all things into consideration, freighting can be done cheaper from this point than any other. The inconvenience of the transfer of goods from the U. P. to the C. P. train is avoided, and the expense of railway freightage from Ogden to any station on Bear river is saved; for the rates from Ogden direct are no higher than from Bear river. Ogden is the plaoe and shrewd Montana men ought to understand it. The name of D. 0. Calder is a sufficient guarantee for the safe baaaliaf and prompt dispatch of goods consigned to Ogden and we are satisfied that those merchants who "try It a whask" will want to ship Eastern freight entirely from the Junction City. - dear-boug- to-da- y; 1 fetT" Gkxtlbmkh wanting Bummer Suits should call and see Patterns at Tiuhkill & Earl's. Confkrkxck. We learn from the Dttmel Keirt, of Monday evening, that the acoustic properties of the New Tabernacle are much improved by the erection of the gallery. About 11,000 persons were present on Sunday last, who were able to henr Prest. Young's remarks all over the building. This will be gratifying news to those who intend going to Conference. Although the New Taber nacle will now seat over 12,000 persons it is probable that the place will be filled to overflowing. A great number of our friends north intend to take advantage of the excursion trains which will run on Conference days from Brigham city and intermediate stations to Salt Lake City and back. The fares are low; the trip will be pleasant, and a railway ride will be a novelty to many of our young folks, and a revival ef a familiar sight to friends gathered from nations afar off. The Conference, which commences tomorrow, will be, in all probability, the largest ever attended by the Latter-da- y : . Saints. Correspondence. Salt Lake City, April, 80th, 1870. Deah Bno. Since returning from the East, lay numerous duties and engagements have prevented tuefroin enjoying continued correspondence with you, or giving you a general idea of my success, and th- - satisfaction I took while will) d our kindred and'friends in the New and adjoining States. My absence of between three and four months was mostly spent in visiting relatives in Massachusetts, scattered from Berkshire Co. to Boston, by all of whom, I was well received, and very kindly cored for. Many of whom I had never seen and others from whom I had been absent 24 years and upwards, manifested that interest which gave me perfect freedom in removing ld anyl forming new acquaintances, some whom I, did not expect to see, traveled lone dis tances to meet me, and learn of kindred and affairs in Utah. By preaching, visiting, and social conversation. I was successful in removing much of the prejudices which had place in their hearts; and causing those more kindly sentiments to prevail, which kindled anew, sympathies more worthy the tohuman heart to cherish, not on wards our family, but towards the people and community with whom we are, and have been so long associated. The extreme ignorance of the people, in relation to Utah, its citizens history of settlements socinl and religious sentiments that prevail here, was to me, truly surprising, and almost all who heard, would freely say. "If those are your views and practice, we must look at, and think of you in quite a different light, and accord to you more generous and liberal feelings. But notwithstanding the general impression, made favorable to our social and political condition, the religious part of our story, is as hard to as it ever has been. believe That the "Mormons" are building up a kingdom on tho earth, under the immediate inspiration of tho Holy Ghost, and revelation from God, preparatory to the coming and reign of Jesus Christ, they cannot be readily convinced, that to be saved, tbsy must repent, and be baptised by other authority than that they have so long recognized, seems to them quite preposterous. They have teen very religious, suslaiuedlheir minister!, and having walked according to the spirit of the Christian age, in which they live, feel that their reward is sure. Te go the way of the world is so much easier, than to be identified with that everywhere defamed people, "The Mormons." I itid not neglect this favorable opportunity of gathering upsuch genealogical information us I could obtain by the aid of relatives now living, and from the record of the dead, to which I could gain access, also photographs of many of them. Some to whom 1 explained my object, which was to do good to the dead, as the Saints did anciently by being ''baptized for tho d :ad" and oiliar-wi,"administering, that the hearts of ;he fathers may bo turned bound to the children nud tiie children to their fathers, became much interested; and some not in the Church, who had never heard such doctrine, gave me their names, that peradventure they might some day be remembered for good in Zron, should they never be gathered or associated with a people of such faith. There Hre a few in the world who can sec and admire the beauty and consistency of the plan of salvation, when rightly presented to theni. I met with influential gentlemen who showed thciuseive friends indeed, among whom were our esteomed schoolmates of boyhood days; M. 11. Grilling Esq., of Danbury, Conn., and Joseph Richardson Esq., of New York, to whom I may refer more particularly in another communication ere long. A few incidents occured in my experience abroad, which I shall relate to you, as I mny have opportunity, believing they will interest you, and possibly some of the readers or your papers.
