The Evening Star learns, on what it regards as good authority, that the president has recalled the request for the resignation dt Judge Fisher as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Several officials have been closely at work in the collector's office, examining the late defalcations. The amount will be much larger than was at first supposed, probably not less than $75,000. The evidence that Jackson's death was by suicide is accumulating. Louisville, 19. The revenue officers have completed their ' investigation of the affairs of the collector's office and report a defalcation of $83,000. It is their belief that Jackson has been stealing for several years. New York, 19. In the court of general sessions, Thomas Spratt, Who threw his wife out of a three-stor- y window, was sentenced to ten years in the State's prison, notwithstanding both man and wife denied the assault. Professor Marsh pronounces the attempted explanation published yesterday by Commissioner Smith in regard to the affairs at Red Cloud agency, a charao terisio trick of the Indian bureau. The old report cited by the commissioner is the only one of a large number on file in the interior department that was favorable, and it is now well known that the special commissioners who make it, owing, mainly to the, snort time they were at the agency, were mistaken in several points, and some of these gentlemen have since informed the department to this effect. The report refers to a different Bet of transactions from those observed by Professor Marsh, and his invest igaticne bad ne connection whatever with those made by tbii commission or any ether. A Times Washington special says: The whiskey men from Chicago and St. Louis make np as desponding a crowd as has ever visited that city. The government move toward selling the distilleries and grounds attached for fines assessed against the owners, is a fatal blow to the whisky men. They hope to get a little longer time before being thrust into the cold world penniless in their coming fight to keep out of the western penitentiaries. (They have made assaults upon Secretary Bristow, but he is immovable, and says the work must go on The ruin of the distillers is a sweeping disaster, for which he de clines to be personally responsible. Baskin, of Salt Lake, is here, and will assist District Attorneys Carey and Wbeedon. This evening there is considerable excitement here ever an unlocked for game which has been sprung upon tbe proseoution. Complaints have been made before a justice of the peace, charging several of the more important witnesses for tbe people in the Lee case, with complicity in the murders at Mountain Meadow. Some of them, also, have been charged with other serious crimes. No arrests have yet been made, but it is understood that warrants are issued, and in the hands of the local officers. Marshal Maxwell has given orders to his deputies not to allow a witness to be arrested and taken eut of tbe county, and toproteot them with force of arms if necessary. Affairs are taking a serious turn, and a day or two may develops something interesting. The public will probably bo tbe gainers by this cross-firinsinoe, as both parties have gone seriously into the business of the Mountain Meadow massacre, the facta ef that affair will doubtless cone to the surface. to-da- y. to-da- y. to-da- ht e, inered-iblediscove- . One example will suffice: Her feeding tin was of a somewhat peculiar shape, and when it was empty the used sometimes to invert it ipon her head. The tin then presented a comical resemblance to a bonnet, and as its wearer would generally favor the spectator with a broad grin at the time of putting it on, she never failed to raise a laugh from them. Her success in this respect was evidently attended with no email gratification on her part. "I once had a Skye terrier, which, like all of his kind, was very intelligent. When in good humor he had several tricks, which I know to have t, and the sole object been of which was evidently to excite laughter. For instance, while lying on one side and violently grinning, he would hold one leg in his mouth. Mr. Darwin, says: 'Several observers have stated that monkeys certainly dislike beisg laughed' at.' There can be little or no doubt that this is true of monkeys; but I never knew of a really good case among dogs save this one, and here the signs of dislike were unequivocal. To give one instance: He used to be very fond of catching flies upon the window-panes, and. if ridiculed when un- successful, was evidently much annoyed. On one occasion, in order to sec what ' he would do, I purposely laughed immoderately every time he failed. It so happened that he did so several times in succession partly, I belitjve, in consequence of ray laughing and eventually he' became so distressed that he positively pretended to catch the fly, going through the appropriate actions with bis lips and tongue, and afterwards rubbing the ground with his neck as if to kill the victim. He then looked up at me with a triumphant air of success. So well was the whole process simulated, that I should have been quite deceived had I not seen that the fly was still on the window. Accordingly I drew his attention to this fact, as welt as to the absence of any thing upon tbe floor; and when he saw that his hypocrisy had been detected, he flunk away under some furniture, evidently much ashamed of himself."
