A A well-know- Cliasin- - a Horse Thief". A pair of lay horses was sUlen from the farm of Allan Merrill, near Water-towon the night of July 10. A buggy and harness were stolen from the eame neighborhood oa the fame night. On the following morning George hull and policeman N. M. Merrill, of Watcrtown, commenced a search for the trace, and going as far as Rodman found that he had f passed their going south. They proceeded immediately in that direction, look the State road for Redfield Square, went on past Orwell, and reached Rich land Station late in the evening, tired, wet and hungry. This was the evening of the 11th, and as it was very dark they were obliged to stop for the night In the morning they followed a track as far as Parish, but here lost all trace. As something must be done they pro ceeded to the office of E. G. Lynch, Esq., and secured his counsel and assistance. The three started and .searched every road iu the , vicinity for several miles around, but without finding anything Then a consultation was held, a team was procured and the three started south driving at a rapid rate. About 8 p. m they struck tho track which they follow ed to Central Square, thence on through Coughdenoy, Schroeppelv Bridge, into Onondaga county In the town of Uay, where the trace was lost again. The track was frund again after some dim culty and ten or fifteen miles travel, one mile west of Chiy Corners, and followed to New Bridge, from there lo Baldwin-- , ville, where they were again thrown off the track, which was only found after nn search. Then a fresh team was procured and Lynch and Shull star ted for I'kinville, leaving oflicer Merrill behind. They passed on to Meridian, only tracking the thief by inquiries of resi dents, whom they called out of bed. At daylight they arrived at Cato, Wayne county,, and here all track was again lost. About C a. m., after procuring a fresh team, Lynch and Shull started for Perryville and struck the track afresh; and going on about four miles, found the wreck of the stolen buggy, which, as tbey afterward learn. d, was the result of the team's running away. They passed on, and about a mile caet of South Butler the team was found. Lynch and Shull were overjoyed. The plucky fellows were fur from giving up yet; however. They pressed on to South Butler, made a short stop, held a consultation, and went on to Savannah Station on Ihe Southern Central Railroad, but after driving about five miles Lynch told Shull to hold up Lis horses, and just as they blacked, Lynch sprang from the wagon across a ditch, and almost before it could be told he bad the irons on the hr.nds of S. F. Crandall. the notorious thief.who siid meekly, "Lynch, I'm a gone sucker; I'm gone lo n, 's h- -l." Tho parly took the back track, Crandall assisting, under orders, to lead back the stolen horses. At Cato officer Merrill relieved Lynch of his prisoner, and Lynch returned to Parish, arriving Saturday night About 12 o'clock Satur. day morning officer Merrill paseed through Parish on bis way to Watertown, where the thief was lodged in jail. No thief was ever followed by three men with such determination as Crandall was. Snalic StorjV From the Hollister Advance, August 24 Ono of the fiercest conflicts that heard was that between an man of tho name of Meegan, who idos rane, recently settled on the 1 a and snake of tho the in anodic, JormUs glutut species. Mecpan had gone at an early hour on Monday morning last to fell some young tree?, when he felt a peculiar motion be neath his riirht foot, on removing which ho was thunderstruck at seeing a Fnake raising his hend and tudy rapidly, and in a perpendicular direction, with eyes glaring fiercely. Without a moment's hesitation and almost without thought of tho consequences, Mecgan grasped the body of the snake at a distance of aboat sixteen inches from tho head and held it firmly as his only chance of escape or thought what was to be done. Meantime tho 6iiake was coil-iu- g the lower part of Meegan's body iu circles and pressing him so acutely as to lead him to believe his hours would give way to the pressure. The snake was now moving his head to the right and left darting at Mccgan'a head, while the latter was compelled to dodge his head so as to avoid tho stake's attack. Mecgan at this timo finding himself losing ground while the snake was gaining strength and vigor, recollected that he had a jack-kniin his pocket, aud, after much trouble and nerve, succeeded in getting hold of it, and,' by a vigorous effort, he cut the body ' of the snake across, about an inch from the spot where he held it. If wasM perhap-- , the greatest relief ho ever experienced to find tho snake's body relaxing and ultimately falling from his body. The head and upper part of tho snake, although still active, was evidently getting weaker, and Meegan ultimately succeeded, by means of his knife, in Elaying the snake altogether. The snake measured nine feet eight inches in length, and was of tho black species. 3Ieegan has preserved it in spirits, with tlie view of forwarding it to San Francisco. we have ever fe - .
