Driving Gamblers from the Northern Pacific! The Cholera in Europe! . Serious Itiot at Greenwich, London! Terrible Explosion at Rheems, Trance! AMERICAN. Chicago, 17. The great engineering work of deepening the Illinois and Michigan canal, so that the waters of Lake Michigan may flow through the Chicago river into the canal, and thence into the Illinois river and finally to the Gulf of Mexico, was completed yesterday, and the dam at the summit on the highest point between the two watersheds was removed. The water rushed through with great force, and the horrible stench of the Chicago river, noted as the most terrible in the world, has disappeared, and the blue waters of the Lake have replaced its inky current. There are immense rejoicings among the people, as tho benefit to the city in a sanitary point of view is incalculable. Many doubts have been expressed as to the final success of the work, which has" cost this city over three millions of dollars, but now it is believed that it will prove a complete triumph of engineering art. The correspondence between Bishop Whitehouse and the wardens of Christ Church, llev. Cheney's, is published this morning. The bishop notifies the wardens of his intention to hold an Episcopal visitation of Christ Church on Sunday, August loth, for the purpose of examining the state of the church administration, administering the rite of confirmation, the sacrament, &c, and begging the assistance of some minister of the church in good standing to be secured, inasmuch as' Christ Church is now without a rector. The wardens' reply is rather sharp. They intimate very plainly that Christ Church has a rector in as good standing as they require, or indeed as any other man ; that such being the case, no such action as the Bishop's is necessary ; that all apostolic correspondence should be addressed to the Hev. Cheney, who is still pastor of the church, and intends to continue there ; that the day fixed by the bishop is in convenient, but they will be happy to assist rum ana their rector in the rites referred to on the tenth Sunday after Trinity; and that "in tfie proper pre paration of candidates for confirmation no rector needs assistance from any other minister of the church." San Francisco, 17. The weather is fine and warm. The town is filled with rumors concerning the Central Pacific and California Pacific railroads. One rumor asserts that the Central sold out to the California, and another that the California has sold out to the Central. It is known that Milton S. Latham has gone to London on business connected with the Califor nia Pacific. Work is stopped on tho cross roads of the California Pacific from Adelante to Petaluma, and it is rumored that the surveying party of the California Pacific from Davisville is called back. Well posted parties think that neither that road has Bold out, or will sell out; but that the Central commencing the air line from Oakland to Sacramento com pels the California Pacific to hesitate about building the through line from the same point. Brooklyn, . Y., 18. The body of an unknown man, which has apparently been in the water some time, was found this morning floating near tho dock.' Deceased is not over years of age, and well dressed. It is be lieved be has been the victim or tout piny, there being marks of violence on . the body. A mad bull dashed out of a herd of and ran down the 9th avecattle nue. Four or five persons were badly hurt by the animal, including a woman. St. 1'aul, 1H. Mayor Abrachett and 0. W. Swett, Attorney of the Road, have cleared out the hordes of gamblers and liquor sellers who have infested the line of the Nothern Pacific and they have all left Brainard, Oaklake, Union Creek and Leaf Fountains, changing their cases to Morris and other .stations on Hie St. Paul and Pacifio Road where they will be as steadily driven off. Bishop Whipple is successfully work civiliza-atio- n ing out the problem of Indian at White Earth. It is officially announced that the Asiatic) cholera has appeared in several places in Poland. The ship "NaUlan," from Bombay for Penan g, foundered in the Indian Ocean; thirty lives were lost. , The Dolice of London lave dispersed a meeting in Hyde Park, the object of which was the promotion of emigration from the United Kingdom. Their action was rendered necessary by the noise and confusion incident to the proceed- to-d- uproar that frightened shopkeepers closed their stores, and business was en- tirely suspended. This condition of affairs lasted, for an hour or two. rUorKTt- WANTS TO TKAUK OC.I)K TY for It KM.
