' Trochu Urges Paris to Resist the German Entry! AMERICAN. New York, 21. The correspondent of the Tribune who accompanied the San Domingo Commission sends the following interesting in formation by8teamer "North America" which arrived here yesterday. 'We had charming weather for t c first two days out; cold indeed, but bright and clear, with fresh and favorable wind, and every prospect of a pleasant voyage. But towards evening of the second day, and until near our destination we experienced many stormy seas. Using generally both steam and sails, we made a moderately quick passage, but the behavior of the vessel under steam was far from satisfactory and the machinery was found to have some serious dufecst. As a sailor, however, the ship was pronounced faultless. At 2 p. m. on the 4th we dropped anchor in the outer harbor of Samana, about two miles from the village. A boat from the "Nantucket" soon boarded us and sometime was passed in pleasant conversation over news from home and from the licet. On the morning of the 25th, the party went ashore at Samara, a poor little dirty place for its picturesque appearance. There are eighty or ninety buildings, consisting for the most part of light frame work brought from the States, and clapboarded with bamboos split in half and pressed flat by placing stones upon them while wet. There is no tavern, hotel or other place of accommodation upon the whole peninsula. A curious phase of Samana life is that almost everybody keeps a shop. Of eighty houses in the place, more than half of them are devoted to trade. At least half the children under eight years were as ua- ked as when born; clothing is looked upon as superfluous. Fruits are always in season, for they ripen all the year round. Ihe only mode of trausporta tion are oxen or bull back, of course they are email ; they are packed in bags made of bark and slung across the animal's backs. The prico of labor, such as the labor may be, is a dollar or a dolcents in United lar and twenty-fiv- e States coin. The population of the village is about 250 ; of the whole Pinin-sulabout 3,000. The majority of the villagers speak English ; there are very few white men. Prof. Blake has taken the temperature as often as possible, and records it averaging 7G to 80. Fahrnheit. Mr. Burr says that the Thermometer rarely in the hottest weather exceeds 90. The officers and crew of the Nantucket, have been in these waters 15 months, and during the time they have not lost a single man by death. Out of the population of three hundred on the Peninsula, in one year thero has only been seventeen deaths. Three hundred births are reported, not a doctor nor a drug store in the village, so no medical testimony could be had. On the subject, of annexation the people but of Samana, are enthusiastic, their opinions of course cannot be assumed as that of a majority of the Islanders. It is the only salvation of this and part of the Republic. All the tradesettleprotection in support of this little ment comes from the United States. The people in consequence of the insecurity have not a heart to raise crops, for they may be destroyed as they have been in times heretofore. There is no law here or redress for robbing, and depredations are inocssant, and many say they will not stay here if the annexation scheme is defeated, for in that case discord will be redoubled.
