Show lcu gunrtum. She Published every WEDNESDAY and SATURDAY, by the Onntx PtmusHi.xa Company. J.tMK! McGAW, President and Business Mannicer, U) whom all Business communications should be addressed. D. RICHARDS, Editoh. C. W. PENROSE, Associate Editoe. FRANKLIN ogde., utaii. Saturday Morning1, Dot. 10, 1870. Prostrate France. The interruption of Cable communication with Europe is Tcry tantalizing lo the Both tho public. cables of 1853 and that of 18o6 are damaged, and the weather has been in a most unfavorable condition for their repair. The French Cable is noted for its inactivity, especially in the trans mission of messages westward, and in consequence of being crowded with business through the failure of the other lines, news comes to us two or three days Instead of bo many hours old. According to the latest telegrams, the condition of France is more critical than it has been at any timo during the war. The sortie from Paris, as an attempt to form a junction with the army of the Loire, is a failure. Uoth French and Germans fought fiercely and determinedly, and the loss of life was enormous, but though tho former succeeded several times in piercing the lines of the besiegers, they accomplished nothing favorable to their cause except losing several thousand lives which leaves them bo many mouths less to feed. Paris is reduced almost to extremity-ra- ts, cats and the animals from Le Jar-di- n da riantei ore being used for food, and the whole city is on very Bhort ratious. The capitulation is expected almost daily. The brief successes of the army of the Loire have been fallowed by terrible reverses. Orleans is by the rrusaians,De Taladincs who it was hoped would be the deliverer of France, is denounced by his unstable countrymen for evacuating the city he had regained from the invader, and the valor of his inexperienced troops fails before the rteady onslaught of tho disciplined armies of Germany. In the North, iManteuffcl has swept before him all the barriers raised to impede his onward march, and Arras Amiens and Rouen havoboen successively occupied by him. One or two unimportant successes have been achieved by Garibaldi in th news-readi- r,nt. " Tint tei iuu hi vj victorious armies of tho Gormans, ami an probability, King William will make terms with conquered France from the Palace of the Tuilerics, and avenge the -u.nmai.on or the Prussian capital by the treat Nannl m niifu. i ranee lies prostrate at the feet of Prussia, and its terrible struggles to rise again appear to be but a useless prolonging of its miseries ana sufferings. "Evil Com in ii ii ion tio lis, etc." no telling how fur his mind may become corrupted. In conclusion, we mildly request that, in future, if the operators are short of copying paper, they say so "on the square" and not try to stuff us- and the public with "cut wires." a tKEFCL ttOBK. tor ten cents Vick's Floral Guide for 1871 can be obtained. It contains 100 pages, 800 wood engravings and information upon flowers and vegetables interesting to every gardner in the country. See advt. ISogug Dust. OFFICIAL. In spite of the vigilance of detectives, and the plans of Government to guard the national currency, countcrfeiters and bogus greonback manipulators drive a roaring trade, and there is no doubt that much spurious money is in circulation. We notico by our dispatches that the Xew York Police are on tho track of the swindlers who tempt foolish persons into dishonest intentions by offering to furnish large sums in "queer" greenbacks, warranted undetectable, for a We small, sum in genuine currency. hope they will meet with their just deserts. But we desire to call public attention to another cheating scheme, which may be extensively tried upon tho citizens of this Territory during the present winter. A few days since, a gentleman residing in one of tho settlements east of this city, sold a horse to a stranger, and received in payment what he supposed was gold dust of good quality, but whicii proved, on a critical test, to be galvanized copper and lead. We are informed that a Banking House in the North, a short timo since, was deceived by a similar trick, and was "sold" for a considerable sum. When dust is offered by strangers it will be well to have tho article thoroughly examined and properly tested, or many scoundrels may thrive, and many honest persons come to grief. Manipulation on a proof Btone aud the application of nitric acid will show the dust in its true light; "bogus" will disappear but the true metal will remain and appear brighter for the test. Look closely at greenbacks, and don't judge dust by its appearance. IiVKKTISED LETTERS. On Wednesday morning last, John C. Vance, of Salt Lake City, while going to tho kanyon, was shot by the accidental discharge of his revolver, which fell out of the scabbord, muzzle upward, struck tho wheel and sent a bullet into his left hip, ranging upward and stopping near the heart. In conse quence of the close proximity of the ball to a vital part, it caunot at present be extracted. On the same day, a daughter of John Yotme. of the TVnt.li W.i ir age, went into a gulley at the rear of her father's house, when a large rock becamo loosened and fell upon her, crushing her head so badly that death ensued almost immediately. On Thursday morning a coroner's inquest was held on tho body of J. C. Smith, of Illinois, who was caught in t snow slide in Cottonwood Kanyon on Monday last, carried several hundred feet down a gulch and completely bur ied. He had been in Utah about two years, was employed as a miner in the Richmond lodo, and had the reputation of being a sober and industrious man.
