Show She Fatal Hail road Accident. guttrtton. Herald, of Tuesday last, gives an account of a fatal accident at the Gillmore Station, on the Union Pacifio Railroad, whereby Mr. Barr, the freight agent, lost his life. Mr. Barr, on Saturday last, attempted to hand some papers te the conductor of the train from the west which, contrary to instructions was not baited at the Station. He took hold of the guard of the car steps, but slipped and fell under the train; his bead was crushed to pieces and his right arm terribly. The awful mangled by the wheels. spectacle was witnessed by Mr. Barr's young wife, to w hem he had been mar ried about a year, who was sitting on the platform with two other ladies. Mr. liarr w as a faithful servant of the Company, and' was universally respected. By his imluHtry and economy he had accumulated a email property at Fremont, and had insurcdhislife for $2,000. This is another to be added to the long list of awful deaths through trying to jump on ond off trains while in mo tion. The utmost caution should be observed on this matter, and none but the foolhardy will jeopardise their lives by such reckless temerity. The latest news from France ia to the effect that negotiations for peace have been successfully entered into between France and Prussia, based on the cession of Alsace and Lorraine and the payment of the war expenses by France. This is most likely one of the lightning lies which bate been not at all uncommon during the progress of the great conflict. It is a most unlikely thing that France will consent to dismemberment. The Tery idea of parting foot of with a territory has caused a storm of fierce indignation to swell through the nation whenever it Las been hinted at, and unless the temper of the people and the Government has become winter. weatherwise profess to discern signs which to their experienced eyes are tokens of severe and prolonged cold weather. We are not blessed with that optical organ denominated a weath er eye, though our nose is a quick detector of frost in the atmosphere, so we cannot pronounee any reliable decision on the subject. The following which we clip from the Reno Cretcent may have some application to Utah, and its closing adage is good to remember anyhow. An experience of more than 20 years on the I'acifio coast has been that early September rains betoken an open Winter, whilst a dry warm Fall indicates y a hard wet Winter. the weather is warm and during all the Fall bas been dry. Our tomato vines are yet fresh and in full bearing. Watermelon vines show no signs of having been troubled with frost and no present indications of storm. We predict heavy rains in California and deep snows in the mountains, with severe cold weather is the State of Nevada. It is safe at any rate to prepare for war in times of peace. ... Garibaldi's entry into France and his movements in aid of the defence are Tery different to whet waa expected, The old lion hat been tamed in his cage at Caprera. The irresistible force with which be used to spring upon his ene mies has been weakened by age, the magnetism of hie voice and presence is cone, and he makes no more etir in the great events of the war than a common General. But if the boldness and majes ty of the onoe great commander of men has been toned down with the- - increase of years and the inactivity of nil quiet island home, tue great ami generous heart still throbs with noble emotions, still beats for liberty, (till sends forth life current charged, in every drop, with a hatred for oppression and injustice, lie has thrown himself into the strife with a whoreMuled desire to aid France in her efforts to drive out the invader. But the coolness ot hie reception and the failure of the Frech Generals to treat the old hero with the respect which liis past deeds aud present generosity demand, brands then with the dark crime of ingratitude. Garibaldi may not be able to assist France as he desires, but the fact that he is on French soil, risking his life, not for honors and rewards, but to aid a defeated people struggling for national existence, ought to win for him their admiration and gratitude, and it their treatment of the heroio old is base and unnatural. pa-tro- Capture of Mall Robber.
