Show Published every Wednesday and Saturday.- - I, FRANKLIN EDITfjR ,Ap J RICHARDS, PUBLISHER. OGDEX. UTAH. Saturday Morningr, Mm. S 1870. Hints for the Tlmos. Although sunshine and showers alter pate, ai;d bright (Uys are still occasion- s, we may p.lly followed by safely say thaj, Spring is close at hand. The frost is out of the ground and gone off for a visit of several months to more congenial climes in the North, and Old Sol is daily regaining his last year's sup remacy. The buds are beginning to swell on the trees, and the green grass is peeping up to see if the cold is gpnq. Now is the time for farmers to prepare every implement for immediate use. They should rir,' up their plows, and get all their farming tools in good trjm, so as to be ready for peal business. It's a , tp leave such things, till the rush of work oomes. While a few dull days are Jeff and the soil is jet unflt for cultivation, they should not Idle away their time looking foe the Spring, but actively exert themselves (o have everything readjr and at hand for the busy time which is close at tljcir doors. Preparations should be made for early sowing anrt planting. Itt.many places our lhfily little foes (or friends as the sequel may show, the grasshoppers, like f he Yankee's hen, have been so heavy on the Tay, that they haye layed themselves away. Their eggs lie thickly inthehoncy-porabe- d earth, and the saini genial rays which will bring forth the cr.ops qf the hnsbandinan, wil bring tjjem forth from their holes by the million. It will be of greut advantage to get crops so far advanced toward maturity, as to be too tough for the delicate taste of the newly hatched hoppers, And should a second plantlhg be necessary, through their depredations, time is a great desideratum. Therefore, farmers ppl in your crops early ; and that yon may be' able to do so, get everything ready for your work. Ploughing, baa already icpmmenoed in some places and it will soon be general in this valley. v , , , . , " Farmers' need pt bo afraid io sow small grain freely. It win all be needed, and somo of it will be wanted before it is ready. Those who have breadstuff suflicient p last fhera until next harvest, are few and far between. And though pur former markets are tp some extent "played out," it will be found that all kinds of cereala will prove to bei gpod property. A great deal of foncing ijeeds.to be done. Fences which ought to have been "fixed" lyng ago, still lie prostrate on fhe ground. In many places tley have totally disappeared., This is a matter that needs immediate attention. Nothing can be more annoying to a man who has "done his bit," than to have his crops exposed through the negligence Qf his noighbors. Few of our farmers are able to entirely enclose tfaeiy and; jthcy are compelled to in fencing. How shameful it is, when, through the laziness or want qf energy and care on the yai-- t of one or two men, " the labors pf tho diligWt are measurably abortife! , By aj means put up the f(Vices, and make them as substantial as your means will allow. It is cheaper to make a goo fence than a poor pne. A good fence gives a feeling of satisfaction and security; a pppr one brings "vanity aud vexation qf spirit.' Still, any fence that is a fence j better than nqne. ' )'aer$eets need. cleaning qut and re; pairing. This ought not to be postponed iotil the ditches are needed for irrigation ( Thoy should be prepared tn timp, so that the land may not be parched up, and the crops be half spoiled, before the wat er can be p.oaxed aloug the choked-u- p channels, yery Uttja snow is stQred up in the mountain chambers, and unless kind heaven sends us frequent showers, we areljkely to be'shorf 6f irrigating fvater. Measures should be adopted to to the fullest 'exuiilite every-streatent, that none b, washed r misapplied. The best varieties of seed" should b selected, bot'h by farmers and gardancrs.1 Now is the time'to look after" them and have them, in. readiness. Now is the ttnw trees to be planted out. man who nas a piece of land shoull Ifaye some fruit trees. Theypay well, look well, und make folks feel well. Get good, budded trees, one year or three years trfi from tee t)ud. Don't Lave pqor, miserable flocky or stalky peaches; nor little sour, crabby apples. The business moUo, Vthe best fs the cheapest," applies to fruit as much as to merchandise. - Fruit trees"1 of id! 'kind are to be oblainod at a small outlay, and only need care and culture to repay the cost a bundred-fqlin a abort lime. Orchards want pruning. ... This should be attended to judiciously. It is better to pay a sqmpetent baud a fair price to snow-storm- bad-flui- i trim them properly, than to spoil your trees by ha eking them yourselves to save a dollar- - Don't b "Pnny i"jaBl pound foolish." j Don't neglect the shade trees. Every street should be adorned with their pleasant foliage. . Their pres ence in front of any dwelling is a wit f the ness of the taste and industry absence owner. Their proyok.es com and gives observing mmdj a parison, the man who lives near of poor ppinion the place where Ihey ought to be. Utility before ornament has been to a great extent the guide of our labors. Times and circumstances have so changed in this fmored, land, that we now can afford to spend a portipn qf our time in ' .t . : i j lita i:. uuuuuiying our uweinog places. tle space might be 4evoted, in sve.ry lot, Flowtp .he beauties of a flower-gardeers! some hardheaded, lumbering, utilitarian will exclaim. What's tb,e uge of flowers,? My gpoq sir, we are not addressing you. If you can't see the benefit of haying flowers around your hqme, as well as cabbages and po tatoes, we are not disposed to argue, the point with you. There are people in the world who draw life, nealth and joy from the cqnlemplaticq pf nature's glorious ornaments; but wljo leave tp ptbers the care and labor of their production. To such we speak, because we believe their carelessness arises from a want of thought. Seeds and cuttings may be obtained for a trifle, which will amply reward your outlay and trouble, when the perfection of tfyeir loveliness is developed under your fostering care. d Bright-huedflowers! The pirest and best instincts of qur souls answer q (Ifoir innocence and purity, and grow stronger through their gentle and pleasant Influence. For our children sake we should make our homes charming and desirable, and flowers will help to make them so. Farmers need not be mere clodhoppers, with no thought for anything but props and stock, seed time and harvest, They should cultivate the beauties as well as the necessaries of life, and Imprqve the mind while (.hey toil for the body. Their occupation is honorable, praise worthy and indispensable. Theirs is the most independent pf ' vocations. There is nothing to hinder them from personal cultivation to the highest degree. But many of them spend too much time In labor wnen labor-tim-e comes, and waste too much time in loafing when the working season is past. If they would oultivate their minds in seasons of reel, they would have more mental vigor to plan out the easiest, best and shortest way to work, and save time enough for recreatipn and improvement eyen in the '" ,' busy season. The foregoing are a few hints, which we hope our particular and esteemed friends, the farmers, will receive in the same spirit in which they are given. 1 1 i? n. sweet-scente- ,'' . ' ' r- .!';!
