The Mexican raiders have a contract to de iver 18.000 head of cattle ai Monterey. They expect to steal them from Texas. It basalso been ascertained that one ereat difficulty under which (he Mexican government labors la that, in sending soldiers to the frontier to prevent the cattle raids, they often desert and become cattle thieves themselves, thus adding to the number of depreda tor instead of decreusing them. The cattle stolen from Texas are shipped alter being run into Mexico Cortina himself has been detected some time ngo in shipping cattle front Bagdad, a fctnail town on the south bank of the Rio Grande, for Cuba, such cattle bearing the marks of their Texas owners. Krum's position as to two ceunts, ami said he should counsel the jury to return a verdict of not guilty as to them. The other counts he held to be good. The defense prooeeded with their side and introduced three letters of a social character which had passed between Joyce and Avery, tending to show that they were in the habit of using such familiar terms as ,lBilIy" atid "Aleck," Joyce's'iuiddle name and Avery's Chris tian name, in writing to each other.
