Show -r THE 5 - 31 ATKItl rr t- A LIZATION FRAUD. The hardest blow that' spiritism has ever received, li:ts been dealt by two of its most distinguished converts in Philadelphia. Hubert Dale Owcu and Dr. Child have withdrawn tiuir endorsement of the '"Katie and have Kin."" that they were deceived For the benefit of those who have nut paid attention to the subject and will ppijrrcsi of modern spiritism, we briefly explain. 1 he influences which rap and pc; and mutter and convulse sensitive mediums, announced mafk-rializilion- , time ago that ppiritd from the "Mimnier laud'' would shortly vUit the earth in visible form, having Lurned the art of materialization, or attracting from the surrounding elements a.id the niagne'ism of certain mediums, sufficient corporeal matter to enable them to appear as beings of fl !) and blood. The first case of the promised materialization of any importance occasioned considerable itujuiry, and was a grsut triumph to .some tie spiritists. Prof. Crookes, of London, a Fellow ff the iloyal Society and a reitieu):ui of scientific reputation, averred that he. had for mouths been in communication with the spirit of "Katie King.'' as she called herself, claiming to be the daughter of a pirate named M Tu'an, who floiuitdicd about two hundred years ago. Prof. Crookes walked and talked had seen, tola-hodwith the materialized spirit, the medium, a young lady iu whom the had the utmost confidence, being on these occasions id a trance and covered up'wit.i a shawl. One drawback to the Professor's glowing accounts of the appearance was the presence of the inevitable cabiuct. ' Katie'' came out of a cabinet and disappeared in the cabinet. To the skeptical this cabinet business always suggests the idea of jugglery. Quo day Crookes' "Katie" Lid farewell to the friend j with whore she had frequently converged, saying she could return no more. It was but a very short time after , Pro-feis- ur this that the spiritualistic World in America was excited by the news that Katie King h:'.d made her appearance The' mediums on in Philadelphia. this occasion were a Mr. and Mrs. Nelsou Holmes. They not only produced "Katie," but several other materialized spirits, and their seances attended by many intelligent persons, who received , the embodied ghosts as veritable visitors from the were other world. Robert Pule Owen and Dr. Child became so convinced of the realities of the visitations, that they wrote articles oa the subject, endorsing the manifestations, and declaring that from their rigid scrutiny and thorough investigation, there was m room for collusion, trickery or deception of any kind. An article on this subject was published in the Atlautic Monthly, and aroused much comment. But a Philadelphia skeptic who, not b'dng'a spiritualist like the above named gentleman, wu hot so easily ; "Katia," and had the whole humbug in his grasp. lie informed Messrs. Owen and Child of his discoveries, and to make assurance doubly sure, induced the lady to give a seance in their presence, ia rooms he prepared for the purpose. .The fraud was fully exposed, and the deceived spiritualists published their cards withdrawing their previous endorsement of the materialization. The inference from this exposure is that if Ilobert Dale Owen cuuld be deceived, so could Prof. Crookes and others, and many who might otherwise have been drawn into the whirlpool of folly known by the name of spiritualism will have their eyes opened to the ridiculous pretensions of professional mediums. The above exposure is not conclusive evidence that spiritism is all trickery, but it is sultieient to cause unthinking and impulsive people to pause and refrain from jumping at hasty conclusions. The materialization humbug has been adduced as But the evidence of immotality. spirits' who are supposed to appear always come in the garments which they wore on earth. If it be argued that the clothiug is only au appearance, made so to the eye, and not a reality, then it may with equal propriety be averred that the beings who are clothed therein arc also but an appearance, and noue of them realities.
