INROSK, Editor. OGIIE5, UTAH. Saturday Mornlnr, May 2!), 1871. Ogden Mines. What we need Immediately. several occasions drawn our business men to the of ihe attention of establishing works in this importance of ores, and lo the reduction for the utty to be made the fortunes of allowing folly iut of such an enterprise to pass into the hands of outsiders. We urge this mat- lor upon their notice once more, with the warning repeated that if tbey do not immediately seize the opportunity before them, capitalists with eyes to sco, and sains to profit by it, will come and take it up right under their noses. We are situated in the very best spot in the mountains for the establishment ef smelting works. The three railroads meet right at our doors, and we are in the center of a district containing vast mineral resources. Every facility that eould be desired for the transportation of ores is at hand, and if reduction works of some kinds were established in Ogden, the stuff would begin to pour in at onoo from a hundred places about which no tsuise lias yet been made la the mining We htvf on. worldi Close to our quiet town a number of valuable lodesare being developed, which will yet cause a rush to the Junction eity. Among them are the following: The "Leopard" and the "Magnolia," la Ogden Eanyon, are both rolling out Tunnels about forty fort in length have been bored into both the mines, and experienced prospectors bare pronounced the indication as tho best they have seen in Utah. The "Clnnebar" lode, discovered by Dr. Nellts, Mr. Wm. Driver and otheis of this city, promises to be a rich thing la quicksilver and other metals. At a meeting of ihe claim holders on Thursday evening last, a contract was let to work it, and all interested are sanguine of success. At the "Copperopolis" mine, a shaft of twelve feet has been sunk the rock getting better all the time, and nearly the whole interest in it has been pur chased by Messrs. J. llorrocks aud W. Gilbert of this city. The Gulden Gale," with a shaft thirty feet deep, ts turning out ore that assays $140 of silver lo the ton. Specimens from tba "Morning Star," assayed in St. Louis show seventy pounds ef tin to the ton, besides portions of antimony, arsenio and silver. A quantity of ore from this mine has Just been shipped to Now Jersey and St. Louis for further assays. The "Uncle Sam," In Strong's Kanyon, a new discovery, yields rich specimens containing silver, iron and antimony. The "Iilack Hawk," also a now gives promise of high grade ores in great abundance. The "King Bee" has a shaft of forty g feet, and turns out quarts, about which the company workiug it do not wish lo say much at present. These are a few cf the claims now being steadily worked, in tho immediate AU that is neighborhood of Ogden. wanted to develop them is capital, and nil that is iseeiled to bring the capital necessary, is reduction works, near quough to Ihe mines to warrant the making of roads, aud the hauling of the oro. With (he present high freight tariff on tho railroads, it k useless to talk of shipping the stuff to other places, but the establishment of reduction works in Ogden would give life lo the mining interest, revive mercantile aotivity, and give general impetus to trade. Let our go-- a headmen, if we have any in town, form a company to establish these works. A large capital is not required at first, a 2.1 horse power engine and boiler is offered by one gentleman towards the enterprise, and there are no doubt others who desire to assist. If this is laid hold of by our own folks at once, there is money in it for them, and prosperity for the city. If they let it slide, in the usual way, a St. Louis company will be here in a short time, and their opportunity will be gone for ever. good paying ore. An Item for a Sensation. A new sensation for the Ami-Morm- press is afforded by the indiscretion of a police officer in Salt Lake City. The facts of the case are simply these: On Sunday last a soldier named Michael Geiger, who had been arrested late on Saturday night for trying while intoxicated to force his way into a house, desiring to procure bail was accompanied at his own request by police officer J. Smith to find it. After going with him to three places, Geiger attempted to escape. The officer fired on the ground to scare him and sckiug him by the coir lar struck him on the head with the butt end of his pistol. His Ilonor Mayor Wells held an examination of tho esse, when it was clearly shown that the pistol was only fired for the purpose of frightening the pr soner, and that the blow was dealt n sudden angsr that he should try to escape aftev the officer's accommodating him in hts search for bail. The Mayor showed that there wss no law requiring tho police to assist prisoners in procuring bail, that it was wrong for Geiger to endeavor to escape, and that it was the duty of an officer to hold his prisoner; but policeman had no right to abuse prisoners anywhere, and that nothing but deadly bodily peril would justify the using of weapons. lie fined officer Smjth $25 for firing his pistol in violation of the city ordinunce, and $75 for striking the prisoner; the officer lo be held in custody until the fines were paid. A great deal of nonsense has been uttered on this simple subject, and those reliable creatures who correspond with Eastern aud Western journals have found an item for a great sensation. A report of the affair, it is said, has been forwarded to Ihe President of the United States, and we may expect to hear once more that ihe "Mormons" are in open rebellion against the Government. The policeman will be magnified into "Ihe Mormon leaders," the drunken soldier into "the whole military force at Camp in the Douglass," and the pistol-sho- t bloodshed treaiuto and ground "war, son," The whole affair would be thought scarcely worthy of comment in any of the great cities of the hind, and tho fine imposed for the officer's indiscretion, which we think very severe, ought to satisfy every reasonable person that the Authorities of Suit Lake City are just as willing to protect individual rights as to u; hold the majesty of the iaw.
