Show Feasting The Dead. fablUhed every WEDNESDAY and SATURDAY by the OiDEif Pobuihims CoHfaht. C. W. PENROSE, Business Manager, to Whom all Business communications should l addressed. The Old and New. 4 sometimes gfsmus upon our light, Through present wrong, the eternal right And step by step since time began, Ws the steady gain of man. Remains to make our own time glad, Our common daily life dirine, And every land a Palestine. We lack but open eye and ear To find the Orient's marvels here, The still small voice in Aatumn's bush, Yod maple wood the burning bush. For still the sew transcends the old, In signs and tokens manlfuldl Slims rieo up men, the Olive waves With roots deep set iu battle graves. Through the harsh noises of the day A low sweet prelude finds its way, Through clouds of doubt and creeds of fear A light is breaking calm and clear. Henceforth my heart shall sigh no more for olden time and holier shore; God's love and blessing, then and there Are now, and here and everywhere. An alarming report has reacted ma that Bismarck had his epics and reporters in every capital of Europe, in every manufacturing town and ehief city, and that the United States are filled with his correspondents, some travelling and others resident. These men, it is said, are charged with missions to vaunt the importance of Germany; to secure the fidelity of every emigrant to the fatherland and to spread the Jesuitical influences of GermanCacsarism in the same manner as the church has profited by a powerful and concrete mechanism of espionage. It is claimed that Germany, copying after the olden tactics of the lloman for her Church, seeks a institutions, and while seemingly smiling on the United States, she really looks to her as a future dependency of the German Empire. It is true that I have heard many Germans entertain this view; but 1 never believed it was with the idea that, by the rapid propagation of the Germans, by their enormous wealth, patient indust ry and good citizenship, they could ever , hope to control North America. Curl Schurz a Senator from Missouri, is one of the leaders, one of the propagandists of this design, though he has not been in good odor with those who made and supported him. Ilis career, my informant believes, is a beginuing of a test of the German colonization scheme in the United States. JlcruWi Farit Letter. Hint to Meddlers. Chronicle, pub lishes a rumor of a terrible tragedy in St. Clair county, Alabama. It appears that a band of disguised men broke into the house of the Tax Col lector of that county, who was absent from home at the time, and demanded the amount of the taxes from his wife. She refused to give it up or tell where it was. After attempting in vain to force her to tell the hiding place of the treasure, they searched for it and found it. After possessing themselves firmly of the money, they ordered her to get them some supper. hue she was busy forced task she herself this with ing conceived the idea of poisoning them, and thus preserving at once the money and her husband's honor. She deftly slipped some arsenic in the coffee she was mixing, ihey drank heartily and fell dead shortly after wards. She stripped the disguises off and found that two of the villains were strangers, but the third was her husband, who had taken this means of stealing the taxes of the people. V Railroad Disbursements. The amount of money paid out for salaries per annum in Philadelphia, by a single railroad corporation, has been estimated at $900,000. There is no question but railroads scatter large amount of money amongst laboring men, and that without rail roads a country is vastly behind the times. The railroad companies already organized in California must Freights and greatly benefit us. passage may, for the time being, be too high for the interests cf the peo ple, but they will be regulated ulti mately to the satisfaction of all. Mr. Shaw, it appears had six times been led out to be hanged, and so many times had been repneV' ed. He gave in this important tes timony while standing on the seventh scaffold. WILLIAMS & CO. super-abundan- That all of good the past has had A During the past three days, com mencing on Sunday mornimg, the Chinese of this city have been enga ged in the celebration of one of their national customs, that of feasting the dead. Every day large numbers of them have paid visits to their plots in the city cemetery, carrying with them a great variety, and a of provisional offerings for their departed friends, and most of which, as is natural to be expected, they brought back with them on their return. The particulars of the celebration of this day by this race has been published so often of late that pur readers must be familiar with the subject. Yesterday the Chinese turned out in full force, aud the scene at the cemetery was one which to many would have been of great interest. Aside from the ieB- tivities of the day, a scene was yesterday progressing not exactly in accordance with the day but still with the habits of the people. Three or lour Chinese were here engaged in gath ering together the bones of one of who died some five their. countrymen, . , or six years since, ana these oeing properly arranged and packed are to be sent to the Flowery Kingdom.
