The answer would naturally be, to worship Ood. A minister in oideu times on his travels saw an altar erected "To the unknown Ood." Do Christians worship an unknown Ood! They do. Is t his the case with us? In some respects, yes. We do not know him as he knows us. He comprehends us from first to last; He knows our thoughts and foresees the result of our acts. We know as much of him as is necessary to worship him acceptably. He is our Father. This we sense in a small degree. If we worship Him in form, without feeling heartfelt gratitude, and the necessity of serving Him, our worship is in rain. Looking at the blameless life and heavenly character of the doctrines of Jesus Christ, it is one of the greatest marvels that not only the Jews, but the whole world did not believe on him. That is looking with honest eyes, by the light of the Spirit of the Lord the same spirit by wliieh he taught the people. Looking at the dark side of the question, it is no marvel that the people did not believe and follow him. The natural heart contains the seeds of death and opposition to Ood, and is not subject to ttie will of Ood. But if every heart could receive the truth, comprehend the right from the darkness, and discern the things of Ood, every one would have believed in him. Compare those days with these. How can the Christian world be what they profess to be and not believe in the revelations of Jesus? Have they tho spirit of Christ? Yes, there is no man bom but has it until he sins against light aud knowledge, so that it withdraws and leavis him la darkness. How much of this spirit must we possess lo believe live goyl In lb tt d&yat Just enough to love the truth sufficiently to forsake all other things for it. Let Jesus go lo tho city of Koine and say to the Pope, "1 have the wordaof life; I have the Holy Priesthood. I can admit into the kingdom of heavenf I can seal on earth and it will be sealed in heaven. Mid loose on earth and it will be loosrcd in heaven." What would they say ? 'Doorkeepers lock up the house and do nut let that mau in again" Have they the spirit of the Lord? Yesi Have they enough to lead tbom to salvation ? No. In the old revivalist times many received the spirit of conviction sufficiently to justify them, until the gospel was presented to them, then, if they rejected it, they were not justified. Von whe obeyed tho gospel la England know, many of you, that you had to decide whether you would obey the Lord or man, when you were in danger ef losing employment and starvation stared you in the fiice. How much of the spirit of tho Lord must we enjoy? Just, enough to obey every requirement f heaven; and any one who is short of this will be short of an exaltation in the Kingdom of Ood. AVhen I was very young I could not receive the doctrines f tho Christian world, but I prayed that ih Lord would preserve mo till I could understand the truth for myself. I received the spirit of justification, but I felt, still, that in the full sense of the Bible Christian. word, I was not Where will you find Bible Christians? There are none on earth except these despised Mormons. Can you find them in the Catholio, Greek or Protestant Churches ? No. As to their creeds, 1 know them from A to the last letter. Have they tho truth? A little; but when the true light comes, and they resist it, darkness takes the place of light within them, and how great is that darkness! V have the gospel. Why will they not receive it? Because they will not bow down in obedience to the Savior, but set themselves up as a pattern aud require the Lord to come to it. They ksk the Lord to bloss them in the path they walk in, but it is a path of their own choostaj;. Are there honorable men on the eanli, who are not able to receive the gospel in it fulness? Yes; and we can read U the revelations about their condition in this world and the world to ome. Their spirits may be pure, but the influences and circumstances thera in their tabernacles have power over them; they will be Judged and rewarded according to their works. Bat an honorable man wilt not wilfully oppose the truth. It is the wicked and ungodly who light against it, god will not have Christ to rule over them, they will continue to receive the spirit of darkness until they sin so that they cannot be forgiven. We hold the keys of the Priesthood of God on earth. Is this boasting ? No.it is testifying of God's mercy to us; and ire bold them for the benefit of the nations of the earth. Who will receive jt? Who will receive the truth and live by it? M'hen I look upon the pcople.I think of ths words ef the Savior, "some seed fell upon stony ground." Some receive the god seed and it springs up but does not bear fruit, for the sun scorches it, and it withers and dies. Some seed falls on rich soil, but when it grows uo (he ln nf gain, thelove and pride of World dhdke the seed like weeds. Bilt some fulls on good ground, and tears fruit, sixty and a hundred fold. Have we received the gospel in honest hearts? Do we bring forth fruit to the glory of God? Who hinders us from serving Ood from morning till evening? from praying, every leisure moment, "0 Lord give me thy Holy Spirit, perserve me from sinning, preserve to thee my heart's affections all the days of my life?" Latter-day Saints, when duty calls attend to it, temporal and spiritual. When the Kingdom is built up, I think we shall be willing to call it all spiritual. Mothers and fathers, will you preserve your children and act so that you can say to your families, "follow me as I follow Christ?" If so, who will have power to pluck them out of your hands? Do you know Ood, and Jesus Christ whom he has sent? Not an imaginary God, seated on the top of a topless throne, but Him who dwells in Heaven surrounded by his angels, and whose spiritfills immensity ? That Jesus who was the son of Mary and of Ood. Do you understand this ? Are there any itchI will say to ing ears here such, we have received the gospel simply because it is true. If you do not believe it bring ou your philosophers aud let them prove it is not true. Is there an infidel here? If so, let me say it is very bard to prove a negative. It is impossible to prove the negative of a fact. Who made this house, that stove, th- - these lamps, &c. ? "Oh they never wero made." Who made the world and the things therein? "Oh, they never were made." That is the negative of all infidels in relation to Ood aud Jesus and their works. In the Tabernacle the other Sunday, an old lady was introduced to me by her husband, who said she had been his wife forty years said she, "President Young why did you not tell us all your doctrine, I wanted to hear all about it." Madam, I said I know what it is you want, to hear about plurality of wives. The reason I did not speak upon it is because it did not come in the course of my remarks. The reason we believe in it is because it is true. You will ask what necessity is there for it. Where do you live? She said "in New York." Do you know that in that city from 15,000 to 20,000 young women die annually in the streets through the wickedness of men. Why do they not marry them and make them honorable? They ruin them, we save them. If you had the spirit of the gospel, you would be willing to submit to the will of God in all things. It is a great care and anxiety for men to have wives. But it is their duty to marry thera and it is the duty of wemen to cleave to good men and avoid the corrupt. There are but few women who are not willing to be governed and guided, aright, but men, the Kings of the earth, the lords of creation ruin all that is below them. We seek to save the children of men ; that is our mission; to save not to destroy. I am grieved lo see some of our children heady, flighty and high minded, and some of their mothers have no bctt 01 Yes, you may go wttn that miim. gentleman for a buggy ride, he is a perfect gentleman, he is so polite, ho writes such beautiful hand and is so well educated." Just such, "gentlemen" if they were only a few miles from New York, would run your daughters into the city and ruin them. 1 here are just such men here. A true gentleman will not presume upon your acquaintance. He will know that as a stranger we have a right to suspect him, and will not seek the society of your daughters. A gentleman if he desires to unite with this people will first obey the gospel and say "give me a mission and let we prove myself," and will go forth and pick up the lost daughters of the house of Israel, and bring them home to Zion. When a stranger asks for the society of your daughters put him down as a traitor.. I know them as well as if I had made them. A gentleman never takes the name of God in vain; he is full of good words, full of good works. So much to the itching cars. If you wan't to know what plurality of wives is for, obey the gospel, and serve the Lord and you will understand. I say to all receive the truth in your hearts, practice the truth in your lives and it will lead you to the eternal fountain of truth, even to God tho Father. elder b. rocsa, JVH. .There is no greater mission for a man on earth than to do good to his fellow man. This is our mission. There are many honorable men who are glad to see us prosper in our work, and a great many wicked men who mourn because they cannot stop our labors and destroy us from the earth. I am happy to know that the Latter-da- y Saints are increasing in numbers and in good works, and that Zion is increasing so that her children will soon cry "give us room that we may dwell." If we continue to increase and keep the laws of God and the land, and are prospered as we have been, it is very probable that the other Territories lying around will be mostly populated by our people. It is not many years since we were a scattered and poor people, but the gospel has been preaehed, ths honest have been gathered out in great numbers, and this work, like the stone from the mountains will roll forward and fill the whole earth, and the time is not far distant when the Saints will act a most important part in the affairs of this republic. Our enemies expect to see us broken up and rejoice over what they call the schisms in our midst. Those who see us as we are know that these schisms are not a drop in the bucket. The scum is rising to the top and we are glad to get rid of it. The majority of the people are true and faithful. There is no doubt a necessity for temptation that we may be tried, but I do not consider it wise to expose our children to temptation. We should shun the very appearance of evil. I consider it would be exceedingly unwise for me to take ny son into the company of rcprobhtes just to show him their evilsand it is the duty of parents and guardians to keep (heir children from the society of those who would lead thera astray. I have traveled a good deal in Europe and met a great many men in business who were very kind and familiar, but they did not think of inviting me to the society of their families, i was a stranger and they knew nothing of my privrte life. Western hospitality is proverbial. If we meet men who act as gentlemen that is no need why we should introduce them to our families The Devil took Jesus to the pinnacle of the Temple and quoted scripture to him. Men will come along now and be very polite and religious, will quote scripture and say "you are a good people" and so forth, while their intentions are of the worst kind. A stranger came to me a short time since, and claimed to be acquainted with me. r. He professed to be a discharged He said we were a fine people and must have great faith in Ood. I did not like his appeal anco much, and kept watch on him while he was round my piece. He went to a neighbor's of mine and set fire to his stacks, we came here to build up the kingdom of Ood and not to harbor men who have no ties to the place and put our families in their power. It is time enough to be familiar with men when they have proved themselves honorable. PRESIDENT. OEO. A. SMITH. I was born in the northern part of New York State, in a town as moral as any place I know of outside the City of the Saints. There were a variety of religious societies there, but we were all trained to avoid the society of any person who had not proved themselves to be moral and honest, and in many instances the children were compelled by their parents ou these grounds, to refrain from associating with each other. This order of thinga impressed my mind very forcibly with the idea that if I associated with any person, I ought first of all to know that he was a decent man. Now while I would impress upon the minds of the Saints, to treat strangers with courtesy, I would also advise tucm not to extend it, so far as to permit designing villains to take the advantage of them. Governor Cummings used to say, when speaking of newspaper reporters, "to prostitute the body is bad enough, but to prostitute the soul is very much worse." There are many of these men of the press who come to Salt Lake City and call to see Pres't. Young, who frequently sends them to my offiee for information. They profess to be very friendly, are delighted with the quiet of the place, the industry of the people etc. I give them all the information they ask for cheerfully, then they go away and lie. If the Devil had studied the matter from the creation I do not believe he could invent as many as they will in twenty-fou- r hours. I always give them correct information and I always expect them to lie. The facts are that the country speaks for itself. No one who passes through, can fuil to admire it and th people who have made it what it is, and any one must know that the tree which produces such fruits is good. They will have to meet their lies at the bar of Ood. The truth will rise triumphant and trample lies under its When strangers come here, let feet. them bare timo before you trust them, let them have a little of the same discipline that we had. I went once to Richmond, Berkshire county, in the pious State of Massachusetts. It was my first visit aud I expected to see everything in perfect order. I had a congregation to preach lo when in came three young men, the sons of Deacons, who put brimstone on the stove to break up the meeting, and nearly siifli cated us. I attended meeting once in the Market Hall Boston, but the meeting was broken up. President Young however, did manage to keep them quiet for a time. So I have a very poor opinion of the State of Massachusetts. We never treat people in that fashion. No man can continue a Latterday Saint unless he studies to be moral and honest. If he is dishonest, licentious and intemperate he will be led astray. If he sets an example before his family of disobedience to authority in the Church, his family will rebel against him. If he indulges in fault finding, he will lose the spirit and go down lo destruction. Remember your prayers and do not get in a hurry. Be diligent in the discharge of all your duties, attend your fast meetings, remember the poor, remember the Sabbath day, do not get in a hurry to be rich, take a diligent course and God will bless you, and help you now and forever. It is belter to cultivate a five acre lot than to cultivate a mine. You can grow potatoes on the lot and after all your labor the mine is nothing but a hole in the ground. Now and then a man gets rich through mining, but not many. There are very few who will settle down to work and be patient and industrious but will get wealth. Do not get craxy and think the hills are all turning into gold for it is not so, and those w ho speculate in mining will find that they have wasted their time and substance. Choir sang "Come thou deserve of all thy Saints." Trayer by Elder n. C. Jacobs. apostleship on earth in 'this generation Who can say this is not so? Joseph Smith lived over 14 years after receiving the authority, and was persecuted, dragged before the courts and finally martyred while under the pledged protection of the State of Illinois; but he was never known to deny his testimony that he had seen an angel. Joseph Smith was a prophet, but it was the apostleship that held the authority. A prophet may foretell future events, but he does not necessarily hold the keys of the Priesthood. Some are weak enough to suppose that the son of the prophet Joseph has the tight to lead the church, but who ordained him to the apostleship ? No one that had authority to do so, that we are acquainted with. It is essential that this authority be conferred by some one who already holds it. An Elder cannot ordain a Seventy, neither can a High Priest ordain an Apostle. It would have been a good thing for that young man if he hsd kept with the church; ho might then, if faithful, have been blest of God and have succeeded to his inheritance. No one can receive these things except through tho legitimate channel. Jesus understood this when ho went to John the Baptist, who held the authority, and was baptized. The Lord works through his servants; we could not abide his presence nor the glory of the angels. The Bible cannot authorize any man to administer the ordinances of the gospel. If a man pretended to get authority from the Statute book to administer civil law, people would call him a fool. A servant of Ood must be called of God as was Airron. John saw in his vision, an angel coming to the earth with the everlasting gospel. If the gospel were on ths earth, the angel John saw would have no business here. But that angel came and restored the everlasting priesthood. When the gospel was preached anHcntly, signs followed the believers, and as soon as tbe priesthood was restored in this age the signs were restored. The same fruits are seen as anciently, and Jesus says by their fruits ye shall know them. Those who obey this gospel know for themselves that it is true, and all mankind are required to obey its laws that they may be saved. Men must accommodate themselves to the Lord's plans; Satan permits men to have religions to suit themselves. Men's notions will not answer for the truth; when God establishes his government on the earth men must bow to it. The Lord has designed nis work to save all mankind who wi I be saved. Joseph and Hyrum and other good men who have died, have gone behind the vail with the authority they held here, and now administer in the spirit. There is a great work for us to do in the redemption of the dead, which we shall continue throughout the millennium. How many of you are concerned after the fate of your fathers? We have testimonies every day that the Lord is with us, and his works are before the whole world but they cannot discern his hand. We have been commanded to gather out of Babylon, but we are not gathered out of Babylon while we engage in its practices. AVhen will tbe kingdom be given to the Saint? When they are worthy of it, and will not turn what ii Lord gives them into the lap of the Devil. The world is seeking to overthrow this work, and some of the Saints have so little understanding as to use the means God has blest them with to support the world. It islike putting into the hands of an enemy a knife to cut our throats. We have come here to do the Lord's will; we must with him; if we abide his laws we shall come into celestial glory in his sacred presence. ELDER JOBS TAYLOR. What is the meaning of the sacrament and why do we partake of it? They administered the sacrament in the churches from which we came but that is not the reason. We partake of it once a week, according to the revelation given to Joseph Smith. If we had pure wine of our own make we .would use it, but we use water as a substitute because it is the purest clement we can obtain. All intelligent people here are acquainted with the fact that Christ came to offer himself as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, by which all mankind can come unlo God. He was "tho Lamb slain before the foundation of the world." Everything concerning this world was known unto God from the beginning the fall, the atonement, the redemption of man, and the final exaltation of tho Saints of God. "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin." The Old Testament as well as the New is full of this doctrine, and the Book of Mormon, as well as the revelations given through Joseph Smith, show that Jesus is Ike mediator between God and man. Why we should have a mediator is not for me to say. Under the Mosaic dispensation bullocks, rams, goats, etc., were sacrificed, but these all had reference to the atonement of Jesus Christ. When the children of Israel were in Goshen, under Pharaoh, there was one particular judgment that came on Egypt because the 2 p. m. Choir sang "Let sinners take their king would not let Israel go. It all happened as Moses to know what church to unite himself said. In Egypt there was great lamen- with, he came across the scripture which says, "If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God." Being simple minded enough to believe what be read was true, he asked of God, sot having any idea but some of the churches were right. Bnt the Lord spoke to him and told hint they had all gone astray, but that if he was faithful God would bring forth a great work through him. Year after year Joseph r&eeived instructions from the angel until he received the mind of the Lord, and had the authority of the Holy Priesthood conferred upon him by the administration of the laying on of hands of refer, James and John, who before had held that authority on earth. Joseph Smith conferred that authority upon others. Brigbam Young holds that same apostleship and kevs. This i the foundation of the n tation and mourning, for the of every house was slain. But there was no mourning in Goshen, for the destroying angel passed by when he saw the blood sprinkled on the door posts. The people partook of the feast called the passcver to commemorate the event, which was a type of the Lamb of God whose blood was to be shed for the sins of the world. When Jesus was about to offer himself up, he called his disciples together to partake of the sacrament on the day of the passover. Why? Because the passover related to what he was going to do to offer himself as a lamb without blemish and without spot. He was the great antitype of what these olden types prefigured. He took bread and broke it and distributed it, ssvine. "this is my body, broken for you," and took wir.e, spying, "this is is my blood first-bor- which is sfted for you, drink ye all of it; henceforth I will no more drink of the fruit of this vine till I drink it with you Here new in my father's kingdom." was the great connecting link running through all the sacrifices of the past and pointing to the future. We look back to what the ancient fathers looked forward to. Hence our faith and happiness is interwoven with that of the Old Bible prophets, as well as of the prophets of this continent who received the same things, and when we meet together to "show forth the Lord's death till he comes," we look for the second advent nnd personal appearance of tho Lord Jesus, when he shall have universal empire, and the Saints of the most high shall take the Kingdom under the whole hearen and possess it for ever and ever. Another thing connected with this is the resurrection from the dead. The ancient Saducees did not believe in the There are many infidels, particularly in France and Germany, who do not believe in it. We believe that after these bodies go to the dust they will be restored to life by tho power and vitality that flows from God. All the ancients looked forward to the resurrection. Job, who lived in what are called the "dark ages," when under the inspiration of God, though afflicted and tormented, exclaimed, "I know that my Redeemer liveth and that he shall stand on the earth in the latter day, and though after my skin worms destroy this body yet in my flesh shall I see God: This same knowledge and glorious hope inspired the servants of God under all circumstances. John saw the glories of the eternal world unfolded, and beheld the first, second and third resurrections; saw the sea deliver up the dead which were in it and death and hell deliver up the dead which were in them, and all stood before Ood lo be judged for the deeds done in the body. When Jesus was buried in the lomb, which was watched by his enemies, the angel rolled away the stone from the sepulchre and Jesus rose up, walked about, and appeared to his disciples; and when Thomas doubted, he said, "reach hither thy finger and thrust it into my hand, and reach hither thy hand nnd thrust it into my side and be not faithless but believing, and blessed is he who believeth and seeth not." I knew Joseph Smith, the prophet of God, and I heard him say in Nauvoo, "there is thetemb I have built for myself and family, I expect to rise in that tomb in the resurrection and strike hands with my father and mother and brothers." Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and those who have received the spirit of his gospel have partaken of eternal life; and we are looking forward to associate with those who have gone before, and we shall burst the barriers of t he tomb, be resurrected with the just, and join in the anthems of praise to Him that sits on tbe throne and to the Lamb for ever. Take this faith away and where are our hopes? Let us walk in the light of the revelations which God gives to us, and seek to do all things required of us, and when the world is redeemed and everything pertaining to the atonement is fulfilled, with all the just and virtuous and upright we shall cuter into the Kingdom and glory of tiod. resurrection of the body. ELDER W, WOODRUFF. What the people have been taught today in Ogden is true and faithful. The men who have addressed us are Prophets and Apostles of God, and the truth is within thera like a fountain of living water. This is the work of God, this is the Zion of God. The Latter-daSaints can offord to wait for the future, and let dinners take their course. We shall do the work we are called to perform, and every weapon formed against us will be broken. Every revelation will be fulfilled. One of the returning Elders said lately, he had but little faith, but that little was guqd. So it is with the Saints ; they prove it by their works. I rejoice in the gospel, and above all in the testimony which God has given me by the Holy Ghost. A man may have visions and see miracles, but there is no testimony like the spirit of inspiration; it informs the judgement enlightens the mind and opens the understanding.
