All went will with them on their western trip until after they left Chicago, when a well dtessod, good looking stranger came along and ucked Mr. Allen if he might have a seat by his side us the train was full of passengers. .Mrs. Allen was lying down on the next seat in front. The stranger sat down and soon learned from Mr. Allen where he was eoiiiir, and the pur pose of his trip. He imormed Mr. Allen that he was a merchant here and seeing the feeble condition of Mr. and Mrs. Allen, paid them many little kindly attentions. 1' malty, he told Mr. Allen that he found himself in rather embarrassing circumstances, from the fact that lie had been compelled to prepay the freight upon his stock of goods, whicSi had been shipped on that train. He furthermore said that he bad only been able to pay this frie.gh'. to Mundoia, where bis goods were to be put off the train a tact that would subj.ct him to great iuconveni :nce. He asked Mr. Al len how much money he Had with hun, aud was informed mat he had one hun dred an I fi.ly dollars sewed ur in the inside of his vest. Confidence stated that be had telegraphed for money which would meet him at Burl.ngton, when ho could repay it. Mr. Allen was back ward about loaning him the money, when the scamp pulled out what looked like $1,000 government bond, and told turn thai in order that he should feel all right, he had best take that as security. This overcame Mr. Allen's scruples, and the precious l.ttie 551oJ, so long aved and so hardly earned, was placed in the hands ol that arrant rogue. When the train stopped at Menlotu, he begged Mr. Allen to keep his seat while he stepi ed out to pay the fit ibt and thut was the lata Mr. Allen saw of him. The bond was of course bocus. The cheat crept through Mr. Allen's hair about the time the train started, and he appealed to the conductor, who was powerless to help him. Weber County Officers: Wm. Wood, and communicated by him to the American Philosophical Society, of which he is President. Peach trees in this vicinity, after produc'ng a few crops, not only cease bearing but perish themselves in a short time: whereas their natural lifij is filly or sixty vears or more. The cause of the defective power of growth is believed by Dr. Wood to be owing to a deficiency ot potash in the so.l, and he assures us that if this alkali be supplied to the tree so that it shall reach the small roois and be absorbed the fruit bearing power is restored, and the tree itself, if prematurely perished, is revived. Be liev.ng with most persons that the cause of the decay lay in the worms at the root of the peach tree, he put in operation a plan which he had seen his father perform more than fifty years before, viz: of digging around the base of the stem a bole four or five inches deep scraping awav all the worms that could be found burrowing at the junction of the stem and root, and filling the hoi lows thus made w,th fresh wood ashes from the fire, wh en, of course, con. tained alt their potash. This was done in the autumn of 18C8; and with a result, in the following sprir.g, at which he was himself aton ished. The trees appeared to have been restored to all their early freshness and vigor: they put fortii bright green leaves, blossomed cop on sly, and bore a crop of fruit such as thev had never borne before, many of the banch?s breaking down under the load of the peaches. Dr. Wood, in reflecting on these results, and noticing that several of the peach trees treated had no worms, came to the conclusion that we must look for an explanation to some other cause than the destruction of a few worms, and this cause he believes to be the ashes, the potash of which being dissolved by the rains, had descended alone the roots to the rootlets, and pre gented to them the very food for the want of which they were dying. Decay in? apple trees bearing stinted and in' edible fruit have been revived by a sim ilar pr cess, and with the like results. All of Dr. Wood's orchards give promise of an abundant supply of fruit this sea son.
