Show Churches Greaves and Daines Report on Typhoid The city engineers office has issued icrmits for the construction of three louses by the Utah Mortgage company. Two will coat about $2000 each and the third is riven aa costing We have made as thorough a study of the typhoid epidemic which occurred in Ogden during part of June and July, 1929, as is feasible at this date and have the following to submit: There occurred in Ogden City during the months of June and July, 1929, fourteen (14) cases which were typhoid fever. They originated between June 20th, 1929, and July 4th, 1929. There were twelve (12) males and two (2) females varying in (58) (8 V) years to fifty-eigages from eight and were varied grouped in widely. They years. Their occupations one exception they all three separate parts of the city. With drank city water during the three weeks previous to the onset of the disease, and evidences point to the conclusion that during for part of this time water from Wheeler creek which gives testindiof all these mains. Moreover, I), coli was entering the city viduals ate at lunch stands, within the city, which had a common milk supply. Five (5) of the fourteen (14) who contracted the disease died ; i.e., there was a mortality of 35.7 per cent. Allow ing for the variation which occurs in the incubation of typhoid fever, it is quite probable that they all contracted the disease at nearly the same period. The sudden onset of the disease, together with polluted water in the city mains, favors the theory of water borne infection. However, there is strong circumstantial evidence against such The feature of the Weber County Farm Bureau field day will be an address by Congressman Don B. Colton. The outing will be held at Irin Farr on August 24. The Eark and Saturday, girls band of thirty pieces will give a concert during the day. Drs, Fonts New Method Dentists, 2488 Washington, phono S4S. ady. Wtbe: college will begin the years work when students report for registration September 12 and IS. Funeral sprays, Baskets and ' preference to others. 3. There were some seventy .individuals drinking water directly from Wheeler creek which would carry pollution in un diluted form as compared with the high dilution which would occur in the city mains; yet we can find no evidence of any of these individuals having contracted typhoid fever. 4. The high mortality. 5. AU individuals who contracted the disease ate at lunch counters which had a common milk supply delivered in cans which were Interchanged between the lunch stands; that is, one stand did not receive the same cans at each delivery. 6. The records show that a waiter at one of these lunch counters had had typhoid fever some forty-fiv- e (45) years preand of first the latter and May part of June, part during viously certain a ill. He positive blood widal 1929, he was recently gave recent illness test for typhoid, which indicates his may have been typhoid fever, but in a mild form due to immunity carried over from the previous attack or due to his being a carrier. It is, therefore, quite highly probable that this waiter, either in the early stages of his recent illness or due to his being a carrier, contaminated food which was the cause of the typhoid outbreak. This theory would account for the following: 1. The limited number of cases which is contrary to what would be expected in a water borne outbreak, 2. The distribution of the cases, all being traced to a common possible source of infection. It is not even probable that these individuals all just happened to eat at these stands and that there is no relationship between this and the outbreak of the disease. 3. The high mortality which could result from either massive infection or infection with highly virulent cultures neither of which is probable in a water borne outbreak. It is, therefore our opinion, based upon the limited available evidence, that the typhoid epidemic was due to food infection and not, as was first thought to be the case, to polluted water. However, in conclusion we wish to state that nothing in this repprt is to be construed as warranting the turning of water which gives the B. coli test into the otherwise ideal water supply of Ogden City. We feel that it cannot be too strongly stressed that this should never be permitted to occur again; for while it is our opinion that the water is in no way associated with the present typhoid outbreak, yet the presence of a polluted water in the city mains is always a potential source of danger which with Ogden's available water is unnecessary.
