PLATFORM Coolidge and Hoover Lauded in Republican Platform; High Tariff Doctrine Reaffirmed; Help for Agriculture Deemed Pressing Need; Development of Natural Resources Pledged : k-- 1 - vrf, ' . f ii ,a . 1? ! , ' i i . I ;; .S i fl Vi V : The Republican convention adopted the platform as prepared by the resolutions committee by a unanimous vote. The tentative draft was prepared by State Senator Hamilton Gardner. The platform indorses the national platform, praises the Republican national administration and the administrations of the Republican state elective officers. The platform in full follows: The Republican party of the state of Utah in convention assembled reaffirms its allegiance to the time-trie- d doctrines and historic traditions of the party. We approve without reservation tho platform adopted by the national convention at Kansas City in June of this year. Upon that declaration of principles and upon our records of fast accomplihments we unhesitatingly ask and expect a renewed expression of confidence from the people of this state. Indorses Administration For 52 of the past 72 years the of the united States has president Been the nominee of the Republican party. During that period largely by the application of Republican policies and under the direction of Republican administrative and legislative skill, this nation has achieved a position of prosperity, contentment and power never before equalled in the worlds history. In all that time the soundness of Republican principles and the Republican genius for administration have never been more strikingly demonstrated than during the past five years. We unhesitatingly indorse the present national administration. Under the leadership of our Republican chief executive the country has been elevated from the depths of post-wdepression to the present condition of By continued general prosperity. most the of economy he rigid Cractice cut down federal taxes and at the same time reduced the national debt. He has maintained friendly relations with other countries without involving ut in any foreign entanglements, lie has insisted upon a high standard of public service, lie has merited and won the esteem and admiration of his fellow citizens. By reason of his outstanding record of honest and faithful service no president has more thoroughly deserved the confidence of America than has President Calvin Coolidge. ar S ; l. i ' t & . f t . :: S lauds Hoover The history of the Republican party is a record of promises translated into deeds. The accomplishments of the present administration are a guarantee of what may be expected of the next To insure a continuance of such accomplishments and of the prosperity now prevailing, the party has selected as its standard bearer a man closely identified with the present administration. Never has a political party in our 1 1- ;M i ilif t t - i ' , s L generation offered to the nation a nominee whose experience, qualifies tions and character better fit him for the high office of president, liis life is a continuous story of distinguished achievements. His public work for the past 15 years in international, humanitarian, business and governmental affairs is without parallel, lie ie a friend of the busi-neman, the farmer and the laborer. To Utah he has a particular appeal, because he was bom in the west, is of the west and has a sympathetic derstanding of our western problems ami aspirations. With the utmost confidence we commend to the people of Utah as the Republican nominee for president, a son of our neighboring state of California, an outstanding American, Herbert Hoover. We gladly pledge our support to another worthy son of the west as the nominee for a man thoroughly familiar with the western agricultural and business conditions, a man of the great common people. Senator Charles Curtis. For Protective Tariff We are proud of the record of the Republican administration in handling the financial affairs of the government. In the past seven years the public debt has been reduced by Government securities totaling over 11 billion dollars have either been retired or refunded at lower interest rates with an annual savings of 275 million dollars. At the same time a Republican congress has passed four tax reduction measures resulting in cutting down the federal tax bill by 51,800,000,000 every year. We pledge our nominees for the United States senate and the house of rep resentatives to continue this noteworthy work of economy. We reaffirm our belief in the protective tariff as a fundamental and essential principle of the economic life of this nation. In particular we assert that Utah, more than any other state in the Union, is dependent upon a protective tariff. Without protection the low cost of foreign production, due to inferior standards of living, our farms could not be operated even to furnish a living to our farmers, thereby depriving the state of an annual income of 195 million dollars; without the tariff our mines must close down, thus losing us an annual payment from outside of over 74 million dollars; without the tariff our sugar and other manufacturing establishments must ecasc to operate, resulting in a loss to this state of oyer 325 million dollars every year; without the tariff our sheep and cattle industries must perish, thereby g off 51 million dollars yearly from our production; and without the tariff our laboring men must submit to low er wages and suffer unemployment We submit to the people of Utah that our economic welfare requires u con whole-heart- y: i , i . : .1 "'11 ed ss vice-preside- nt, . 4 r 1 Vi ! .4 ' ' , I . . ' ; ; cut-tin- i tinued adherence to the beneficent principles of tariff protection. We pledge uur senatorial and congressional nominee to an unfaltering allegiance to protective principles. Doubts Democrat In this connection we have good reason to distrust the statements of the national, Democratic party reform, alleging a conversion to the protective tariff. We direct attention to the fact that each time the Democrats have been in power nationally, notwithstanding their previous promises to the country, they have so tinkered with th tariff that economic chaos has inevitably come about. As a result, Utah farm products could not I disposed of; Utah mines and factories were forced to shut down; the Utah sheep and cattle industries almost perished; and our laboring men were out of work. The same result may he expected of any future Democratic manipulation of the tariff. We ask the people of Utah the tariff to its proven Reto and not to its Demofriends publican cratic enemies. The Republican party of Utah asserts its pride in the outstanding contribution to the national administration made by its distinguished senior senator, Reed Smoot. His untiring energy, his unsurpassed knowledge of financial and governmental affairs, his unfailing solicitude for the welfare of his constituents have won him n place in Washington second to none. We ask the people of Utah to sustain his efforts by electing at the forthcoming election another Republican senator to serve with him. lraise Congressmen We also commend the work of the two Utah members of the national house of representatives, Congressmen Don B. Colton and Elmer O. JiCntherwood. They have been consistently and continuously alert for every opportunity to protect the interests of this state and the nation. We bespeak their We commend the last two Republican state legislatures for their clear vision, yet progresses outlook, and their demonstrated desire to promote the best interests of the state. In the interest of economy and efficiency they abolished a num com- missions, in some cases over the veto of a Democratic governor. We pledge our legislative nominees to such further action of the same kind as is consistent with good government. We also indorse the able, efficient And economical service of our Republican state elective officers. The Republican party is proud of the fact that it has obtained from-thfederal government for the benefit of our school children the undisputed title to the school lands in this state. This work was wisely initiated by a Republican governor and persistently carried on to ultimate success by the Republican delegation in Congress and by the Republican state officials. Wc praise the untiring efforts of Senator Smoot, Congressman d and Congressman Colton and the last Republican legislature in safeguarding the valuable rights and interests of the state of Utah in the Colorado river. We pledge the nominees of our party to- unceasing vigilance in carrying "on this work and in obtaining such federal reclamation projects for Utah as are beneficial Loath-erwoo- and feasible. To Watch Taxes With Justifiable pride we direct nec-ssa- ry burden. We realize that the eighteenth amendment is part of the constitution of the United States and as such is the supreme law of the land. We also recognize that the amendment to article XXII of the constitution of Utah which prohibits the manufacture am sale of intoxicating liquors, is tart of the supreme law of this state. All officers of this state are under solemn oath to uphold the federal and state constitutions including these provisions. Without Republican nominees to exert their most faithful ef- forts toward the enforcement of these constitutional provisions and all laws passed thereunder. Friend to Farmers Agriculture is a basic industry in Utah. We recognize that the economic advancement of this state depends in large measure upon the prosperity of our farms and upon the financial success of the men and women who cultivate them. We blievc that agriculture should be on an economic parity with other industries. The record of the Republican party is one of consistent friendliness to the fanner. We heartily indorse the forward-lookin- g program for the benefit of the farmer contained in our national platform. And we approve unresen-edlthe interpretation of that program by our presidential nominee when he says: HAn outstanding proposal of the party d program is the pledge to undertake the reorganization of the marketing system upon sounder and more economical lines. Wc have al ready contributed greatly to this purpose by the acts supporting farm cooperatives. the establishment of in termediate credit banks, the rcgula tion of stockyards, public exchange: and the expansion of the department of agriculture. The platform proposes to go much farther. It pledges the creation of a federal farm board of representative farmers to bo eluthed with authority and resources with which not only to still further aid farmers and pools am to assist generally in solution of farm problems, but especially to build up with federal finance farmer-owne- d r.nd farmer controlled whole-hearte- All the Airs. We are- happy to associate the women with us as full in the great public service of the party and in party government. We assert our justifiable pride in the educational system of this state. To the limit only of the available public revenues we gladly pledge our - ers support to maintain and improve the present high standard of our schools. We stand rendy to foster such administrative and legislative measures as are reasonable, calculated to safeguard the public health; to promote public safety; to protect women and children in their labor and otherwise; to care for the worthy poor, the mentally deficient and other unfortunates, and generally to assist in the solution of the state problems of social welfare. Finally we present this platform and our party nominees to the people in the sincere belief that the development and prosperity of this state are indissolubly linked with the continuation of Republican principles. We feel assured that the common sense, fairness and patriotism of the people of Utah will prevail We expect them to demonstrate conslusively that they will not be ready to turn tho White House into the headquarters of Tammany hall. With an unswerving conviction in the justice of our cause, we shall wage a vigorous campaign for that cause, and with the utmost confidence we await the verdict of the people. Water Dispute Puts Mnn in Hospital James Chelemes und Chris Apotolas, greek farmers living in the vicinity of Clear-fielentered into an argument over some waste water. It is alleged that the argument became so heated that Chelemes struck Apotolas over the head with a shovel, causing a basil fracture of the skull. Apotolas was taken to a hospital where ho is now d, being treated, and the physicians port a very slight chance for his hawks. "Think of the brave mother birds who stand guard outside their nests, thinking not of themselves, or whether they will be hurt, but only trying t protect the little blrdtlngs within tka nest. "Think, too, of the brave daddle. who look after the little birds and the mother birds." So the people spoke and they drove away the goshawks, for the goshawks were really cruel. But after they were gone people appreciated the robins and the and all the other birds more tliun ever before. It was soon after that that a party was given for the robins and tbe song gpnrrows. The party was given by little Bailey. Well, about two or three years ago a great many goshawks made s raid on one section of the country and destroyed birds as well as of little number any many of the little barnyard creatures So that when they were seen again In another section of the country, every one got very much excited and ments. Material prosperity and moral progress must march together. Consistent with this high aim, we repeat our assurances of friendship for the men and women who labor. Under the Republican tariff system laboring may with certainty expect to enjoy steady employment, liberal wages and the highest standard of living in the world. During the past eight years, under Re publican initiative and guidance, more careful study of public finances and taxation has been made and more substantial results have been obtained than in any like period of the states history. We pledge all Republicans who hold public office to scrutinize with the utmost rare the expenditure of public moneys and to reduce such expenditures to the absolute minimum consistent with public necessity. Wo also pledge Republican legislators, firsts to a painstaking study of our system of taxation, and, second, to such legislative action as yrill bring about the greatest possible reduction and equitable distribution of the tax if Bonner camrrr Successful democracy rests wholly upon the moral and spiritual quality ot its people.
