The religious lead-- t .emk city have strengthened this firing to their members an example of this fraternal spirit and the effect has borne fruit in the peace and progress of the city. The church life of Ogden naturally falls into three divisions of thought. Of these, the following of the Church of Latter-da- y Saints leads in membership and influence. A distinct progress has been accomplished by the membership of this church along the line of new and admirably equipped church buildings. The past two years has seen some of the wards erecting new houses of worship which, with their provision for recreational activities advantageously housed in modern adjoining amusement structures, will equal religious opportunities found in much larger cities. In the erection of these new chapels and ward buildings, artistic effect has been combined with utility of purpose. The beauty and spacious convenience of these new edifices tells a story of local prosperity that is exceptional. It is the aim of this church to provide in each religious ward of the city the best possible advantages for their membership of all ages. The wards have been divided that each section of the city will have it's own local spiritual and recreational center. Into this advance building program the individual members have entered most xealously and given their leaders loyal support. This church has sponsored also the two leading humanitarian institutions of Ogden. The Thomas D. Dee Memorial hospital is probably the most outstanding memorial to a civic leader in the state. This worthy institution has ever received the support, not only of Saints membership, the Latter-da- y community but of the entire facilThe complete as well. ities for physical rebuilding as found in this building is a testimonial to the unselfsh spirit of its founders. Weber college, established by those of the faith of this church, continues to expand it's usefulness through the enlarging number of students seeking learning in it's several departments. The work of the St. Joseph Catholic church has ever been of an outstanding nature in Ogden. The long and efficient service of the late Monsignore Cushnahan has left an herit OF TYPICAL OGDEN RESIDENCES age of good will and appreciative favor from the entire community that will bear fruit for years to come. TTiis parish work is continued by a staff of younger priests who are efficiently carrying on the wide work in a spirit of in all that makes foi the united betterment of the city. The two outstanding acivitiea of the Cah-ol- ic faith in Ogden are the Sacred Heart academy and the St. Joseph parish school. The Sacred Heart academy is one of the continuing pioneer educational centers of the state. It draws many to it's advantages who are not connected with the Catholic faith and from them receives hearty praise for the instruction offered. St. Joseph school ministers to a large number of children who can reside at home. The third group of religious organizations combine the several organizations of the Christian, Christian Scientists, Congregational, Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Seventh Day Advent Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, Presbyterian and several organizations of smaller groups who are, nevertheless, doing efficient service to benefit mankind There is also a numbr of churches ministering to distinct groups. Of these the Japanese Evangelical, and the two organizations for colored citizens are doing efficient work. Mission work in Ogden is being carried on by lay workers in other organizations quite successfully. Some of these organizations have more than one field of activity. The Episcopalian church conducts services in Plain City. The Baptist membership sponsors a Sunday school department in West Ogden, and the Presbyterians maintain a second or- ganization in the Central Park fellowship in tiie southern portion of the city. These institutions carry forward the usual forms of religious effort with a degree of success as shown in their reports to be fully in step with the prosperity of the community. The Sunday school work is by the nature of the citizenry an outstanding one. The reports from the Ogden churches in this line of religious work have been exceptional. The percentage of gain in membership from year to year has been a constant one, and the rate of growth is greater than in most cities of like population. In material progress, the The Baptist report is encouraging. and Methodist organizationa are housed in new and modern edifices. The Presbyterian church has just com- pleted expensive improvements, a new organ has been installed and adjoining property secured for new needed facilities. The Guild hall of the Episcopal church provides convenient quarters fur the social work of the parish. Chamber of Commerce Stimulates Growth By ALBERT K. BECKER President Ogdens business men have long since realized that Ogden cannot grow out of proportion to the growth of her trade territory. This well established principal in all centers of agricultural territory presents the problem: What can these centers do to stimulate growth and activity in the trade area of such communities or centers? The business men of Ogden, through their chamber of commerce, have in a very definite organized way, assisted developments proposed throughout the intermountain country by active participation financially and morally. This activity has been the result of response to invitation from communities effected or through invitation on the part of Ogden proper. Communities within Ogden's trade territory seldom stage community events that do not receive the active support of the Ogden chamber of comerce through a delegation of Ogdens business men ready to assist and willing to enter into the spirit of the occasion. The business men of this city welcome the opportunity to be of service to any and all communities within her trade territory. Annually, the Ogden chamber of delegacommerce sends a good-wi- ll tion into some sections of the intermountain country, preaching the prin cipal of and inter-dependenc- e. Realizing that the entire intermountain country is and must of necessity always be an agricultural and livestock section, a great deal of effort is put forth annually by the chamber of comerce tending toward the development of this great industry. Ogden has found it very effective to work in close harmony with the farm bureau, the county agents and the entire extension departments of the State Agricultural college in the encouragement of the production of better livestock and increased efficiency in agricultural development. Agriculturally, Ogden has developed institutions fundamentally and entirely for the purpose of offering marketing and grading facilities for the livestock and agricultural products in the produced Reference is tain intermoun- made in this region. case to the stockyards, packing plants and the great grain, milling and feed industry. Ogdens unselfish attitude has been very definitely expressed in her affords and accomplishments in supporting the principal of good roads in rural communities. It has been the program of the good roads committee to urge development of roads into the farming sections without consideration to the direct affect such roads Pracmay have on Ogden proper. tically all sections of Weber county are topped with roads, making for the pleasure and satisfaction of those who are the fundamental foundation of the nation, namely, the farmer. The Ogden chamber of commerce is proud of her record in responding to calls from sections in the intermountain country and the Pacific coast. In dustries and communities in need of support from the Ogden chamber of commerce have always received careful consideration and investigation, and if the requests erit the support of this chamber of commerce, it is always forthcoming. I am confident that there is no community in the United States thac has a class of membership in its hard-surfac- ed clutmber of commerce who are more auhr, more aggmsive and more in the interests of 'riido territories, coniiu initios and sectional development than are the citizens of Ogden. In addition to the interest shown in tho development of the intermountain country, the Ogden chamber of commerce has a very definite policy in dealing with community development, industrial development and retail development. The industrial division of the chamber of commerce is very active in the promotion of a better understanding between the retail distributing interself-sacrifici- ests of this community and the Industrial activities. They are developing a plan for a better understanding between employes and managers, with a view of increasing the cooperation that must exist between these inter-et- s in order thut development may le consistent and progressive. The industrial division has made a rather complete industrial survey of Ogden, which is used as a basis for future development, and for the purpoce of a thorough understanding of Ogden's position industrially, commercially and civically. i i v' ! )l l- The retail merchants division of the clamber of commerce has gone a long way in developing a sprit of cooperation among the retail distributing sts. Their unselfish, democratic and cooperative attitude, coupled with their desire to lend a helping hand to all interests within the intermountain country, surely spells success and the future development of Ogden. ir , V.
