Instructions were issued to the maintenance forces to proceed at once on an extensive program. Under plans laid down this will involve expenditure of about $18,009 of which about 74 per cent will be federal funds and the balance will be principally state highway funds in erecting the signs and standards of approved design and type on all interstate connections where the route has been finally laid out. This will embrace the road from the state line westerly through Echo and Weber canyons to Ogden; from Nephi to Pigeon Hollow, thence to Fairview in Sanpete county to the Arizona state line on the Grand canyon connection with lateral routes over the Sevier-Cov- e Fort, the Bryce canyon and the Cedar-Lon- g Valley roads; from Andersons ranch to Zion National park; from Castlcgate to Du chesne; from' Kimballs junction to the Colorado state line and the Grand junction connection with Colorado as far westerly as Price. Work is now being finished on the signing of the Wendover road westerly from Salt Lake and several other routes recently authorized. Some additional roads which have remained closed to traffic all winter were ordered thrown open Tuesday by the road commission. These will in elude the lower two miles on the high line road in Parleys canyon which is still under construction and the Cedar liOng valley road to Cedar Breaks. The latter road is opened to passenger cars and light traffic June 1, and to trucks and heavier traffic on June 5. agreement was signed with the forest service covering the use of $112,495 forest highway funds d for construction work on the including the placing of a gravel surface on the road through Strawberry valley. Contracts were signed and contractors were ordered to proceed with the work of letting the 3.83 mile paving project north of Logan to Christensen, Jacobs & Gardner at a cost of about $93,000 and to A. G. Young & company for the construction of the Valiev City bridge in Grand county. Federal aid funds aggregating $202,879.82 were paid the state Tuesday on completed highway Utah-Wyomi- ng While the assessment valuation placed by county assessors upon real estate and personal property other than livestock for taxation purposes this year took a decided drop, the valuations placed upon improvements and livestock were increased enough to more than offset the difference, it was shown by data compiled in the offices of the state board of equalization and assessments. Real estate in all the counties was valued by the county assessors at a total of $197,509,405, as compared with the final assessment of that class of property of $201,217,101 in 1927. The total valuation placed by the assessors upon the personal property other than livestock this year was $98,138,-79while the final assessment of this class of property last year was These figures are $100,085,909. reached by using last years figures for this year also in the case of Duchesne county, which has failed to file a report with the state board to date. The drop in real estate values is due to a reclassification of that class of property in Salt Lake county. The drop in the personal property valuation has not been explained, beyond the fact that nearly 1000 fewer motor vehicles has been listed this 0, ive H. A.
