They are what one would ordinarily term levelheaded men, citizens of good judgment, conservative and capable, and able to reason out the most logical remedies for the nation's ailments. It numbers among its membership, for instance, such successful citizens as Charles Evans Hughes, Frank 0. Lowdcn. John Hays Hammond, David Starr Jordan, Charles M. Schwab, Nicholas Murray flutter and a long list of others equally as prominent. Some time ago the National Economic Iengue sent out a questionnaire to its members with a view to determining just what constitutes his countrys greatest problem. Approximately 4,800 questionnaires have been returned, and it is of interest to learn that of the number 1,203 record a disrespect for law as the paramount terest is the fact that MO recorded the World Court as our greatest need, while 7M hold that taxation problems are still of greater importance than any others. A second ballot was sent out to determine the general belief as to the cause of disrespect for law, and in this balloting the prohibition laws are held to be the principal reason. The purpose of the National Economic League, as its leaders explain, is to create an informed and disinterested leadership for public opinion; a leadership that is free from partisan bias or class interest, and that will be accepted as representing the best thought of the country." It is serving a good purpose. When it sounds out several thousand representative citizens and from them determines that the country's greatest need is deeper respect for its laws, it lays the ground plan for constructive work. When it is able to determine that, in the opinion of those who are in position to know, lax enforcement or the nations laws is encouraging lawlessness, it has sounded a note of warning not to be overlooked. If the blame for awiessness lies at the door of the udiciary itself, as the questionnaires ndicate, then it is a matter to be ad usted by the electorate. 1, 1927 Inc. The problem of the nation.
