He was the guest of President Janies H. DcYine, of the Ogden chamber of commerce. Before leaving for San Francisco Mr. Crosby said the following of Ogden: Ogden is a splendid city, with wonderful surroundings and an excellent justness center. As to the coming of ;he Royal Milling company to Ogden, the plant will be started as soon as possible. Mr. Sherwood will arrange all these matters. I have not made sufficient study of Ogden as a wheat milling center to discuss that subject." the cabins that Fort? This is one of Q. was in the Goodyear Yes." A. When did your father buy it?" A In 1848. Miles Goodyear vacated the Q. and your father and family place Q. it? Yes." Your are confident that this is the same cabin which you have identified before?" A. Yes, I remember the old port A. Q. holes. Brown told of things about the old cabin that were still intact as they were the time he lived there when he was a boy. About the year 1835 Miles M. Good year, trapper and hunter and also in the employ of the Hudson Bay company, succeeded in obtaining a grant of land from the Mexican government, embracing a large portion of what is now the county of Weber. .The grant included all the land within the following boundaries. Commencing at the mouth of Weber canyon, thence due West to the Great Salt Lake; commencing again at the mouth of Weber canyon, thence northwest along the high water mark or base of the mountains to a point now known as Utah Hot Springs; thence due West to the lake comprising all the lands in the above inclosure from the mountain to the - lake. Miles M. Goodyear was probably born in the West, but the earliest known of him was at the age of fifteen years, at which time he was living with Captain Grant, at Fort Hall, in what is now Idaho, near the te of the present Fort Hall the d station being Ross Fork. Captain Grant was in command of the fort, and waa one of the leading agents of the Hudson Bay company. At this ("ft and with Captain Grant, Miles Goodyear passed his life from his rail-ma- fifteenth year until he was twenty one. He then struck out for himself, ?d coming south entered this valley, ms predecessor Peter Skeen, of Ogden, having come in from the East. It is thought that Goodyear pur- chased his land grant from Mexico. However that may be, Goodyear took Possession of his Mexican Grant in lf' jo, and lived on the land continually tor about a dozen years, hunting, trapping and trading with the Indians. An old fort which had been partly hu:lt, doubtless by the Hudson Bay company many years before, but which had been vacated by its builder, was taken possession of by Goodyear who enlarged and strengthened it and made of it the most pretentious between Fort Hall and the new Mexican These improvements indicate Goodyear had considerable trade w:tn the Indians, and was a man of nege influence, being highly respected by the Indians with which he did trading. This fort originally covered about of an acre, and was made very strong, built so close to Weber 'er edge that water could be ob""e-eigh- th tained without much risk even during time, of special danger. It was built of cottonwood logs, mostly round, and foot or more in diameter, some, however, being split in half, placed upright sunk firmly in the ground hna their tops sharpened. The logs 'cre from twelve to fifteen feet high , (Continued On Page Eight.). Fill DAY, FlT.ltl ARY 11. 1927.
