Two Were Seen Together at 2 p. m. Yesterday and Prisoner Had a Revolver, Same Calibre aa gullet That Killed Scott. re It is almost a certainty that the murder of whoe W, Scon, yet warm body was found lu an Oregon fcliOit lne f. eight nr In the South- ern Pacific yards Wednesday afternoon la now in the tolla of the law In the person of Charles Stone. From information that a man waa seen with Scott a few hours previous to the murder and from the alight description of him obtainable It waa rather a hard clue for the officers to work upon, but about 10: SO a. in. yesterday Detective Pender and Sergeant Chambers ran acroba a man on luen-ty-fif- iu street, between Lincoln and Grant, who answered the inragre description. They took him in custody and on tbe way up the prisoner asked: "What am 1 arrested for? "You know what it la for, answered Sergeant Chambers. said Stone, "Well, I'm Innocent, but hia furtive glances belled the statement. Since the commission of the awful deed the officers of the law, city and county, have not retied a moment In their search for evidence to run tha murderer to earth. Chief Browning has directed the search with a zealous-nes- a commendable in the extreme and In addition lu him and the two officers who made the arrest. District Attorney George Halverson, Sergeant Wilson and Die sheriff's force have been working diligently on the case. Tbe new facts ascertained by ibetr combined fastens tha murder almost beyond doubt upon tbe man In custody, Charles Stone. W. Scott and C. Stone worked for several days last week fur L. C. Kelsey on the sewer on Twenty-fir- st street, Kelseys timekeeper, J. C. Lhat-flel- d. Identified the dead body as that of Scott and the prisoner aa bring the one who worked on the newer the same time. Both men quit work on tbe lat of the month, evidently with the Intention of leaving town. There are witnesses to prove that they left the Ogden House together Wednesday afternoon about 2 oclock. It can also be proven that Stoss tried to dispose of a .45 calibre revolver before going down to the ytrda which fact la moat significant when It ia taken into consideration that tha murdered man was killed with a revolver of the aama calibre. The prisoner admits that ha waa with Scott In the yards a few minutes after I oclock, but claims that Scott told him he didnt want him (Stone) to go with him and that then he left. It was thought at first by some of tha officers that tbs man was killed outside in the yards and then placed in the car, but that theory haa been exploded now and it la a certainty that he was killed while inaids the car. The parties who entered tjiat car did so by means of the car next to It. The theory that Scott waa killed inside the car seems to be borne out by the fact that no report was heard by any one in the yard&'The sealed car would muffle a piatol shut so that it could not be heard very far. Tbe bullet which, after penetrating the body of tbe murdered man, was found in his clothes, ia .45 calibre, fitting the calibre of gun which Stone tried to cell before leaving for the yards. A chain of circumstantial evidence has been forged which it aeema almost Impossible to break and tha officers of the law deserve great credit for their efforts In untiring running tAo murderer to earth. Ha put off visiting the fair until all at once he realized that he would not see its like in a lifetime, that it la tha last great universal exposition, and that be will be very much chagrined at his Inability to discuss tbe features of tbe fair with hia neighbors and friends who saw it Or perhaps he was one of thnae unfortunate mortals who never do the right thing at tbe right time and who was afraid of going to the exposition too early and also afraid of going too late, go he suddenly decides to come, throws a tew things In a grip and deprive his wife of one of tha most enjoyable experiences of her life, that of "packing a trunk," and scurries to the train. No use wasting time in doleful lamentations over his infirmities. 11a will always be a Late Comer never a Firat Arrival, never a Better be a Late Comer than a Never Waa So we must help him to see tbe fair and to have a good time.
