Getting to the question as to why this new movement inaugurated by that paper is a good thing for tha Republican, I will explain; It haa been the means of taking out s. the ranks of that party all the aV those who have been creatieore-htad- hy dissension ana trouble: It has stamped on the mlnda of the voters and of the public the name and Identity of thorn who are really renew fades to their party men who, if left within the Reimblicaa ranks to pursue their nasal way, would be constantly stirring up a mess; creating strife and reusing dissensions. The great bnk of the Gentile Republicans in Utah, particularly those who are leaders of the old Liberal party, are practically unanimous in opposition to the movement. The true Republican sees In thia movement the danger to the congressional and legislative tickets, aa well aa to the electoral ticket. Consequently he is not in sympathy with the bolters. My opinion is that as It geia nearer electloif ilay the party will lose rather than gain strength. I think tbe proportion of votes the movement will gain will be ten Republican to one Democratic vote." Judge Wilson 1. Snyder The people behind the move should have made an honest attempt, to work oat what they claim to desire through the Republican party first. Had they attempted Ineffectually to pass a resolution in tha Republican convention condemning church influence ln politics, they would have been In better shape morally to bolt the ticket. Aa far aa I have been able to observe, there was evidence of Bmootism in the convention, but no evidence of Interference from church headquartera. can-(Ha- ed Two gentlemen were discussing the Hon. While there were xeveraj sharp con- tests, nevertheless the four hundred and sixty delegates, the chosen representatives of the Republican party of the stale, who participated ln the deliberations of the convention, acquiesced In the results. Not one of the defeated candidates at that convention has any grievance, but to the contrary all are loyally supjmrtlng the entire Republican ticket. At that convention a state central committee was named, emulating of one member for each of the twenty-seve- n counties in tha state, auch member being elected by the delegates of hia party, to the state convention. this committee met with the nomineea selected by that convention, and after due deliberation unanimously selected a chairA few days later tbe chairman man. selected an executive committee. Some of the members were not delegates to, nor participants In the deliberations of the state convention, but are men interested In the welfare of the party at large, are loyal Republicans, and all desire a compleur victory of the party in the state ln the ensuing election. Finding that the Salt luke Tribuna, heretofore a Republliwn paper, was not supporting the Republican ticket, this committee aa soon aa organized, sought a conference with Senator Kearns, the principal owner of the Tribune, and Joseph Lippman. Esq.. United Slates district attorney for Utah, and political manager for Senator Kearns and also the manager of the Tribute, with the end In view of harmonising and reconciling any differences or grievencea entertained by them, and If possible securing their aid and support and that of the Tribune for the Republican ticket and for tbe Republican I tarty. Thia movement for harmony was made, not because the committee believed favors or special consideration should be shown any candidate or person, but as representatives of tha Republican party of Utah the committee believed that it would fall short of ita duty if it failed to make every effort to reconcile and harmonise all members of the party. That conference took place at Salt Lake City on the evening of September 6, 1904, and tha overtures for harmony were declined. Mr. Lippman asserted that "church influence dominated tha convention that nominated the Republican state ticket. On being requested to state a ease of sorb influence, the instances cited were promptly and effectually proved to be unwarranted. Tbe committee offered to make any honorable and reasonable concession possible, and labored long and earnestly to Induce the Tribune to support the Republican ticket but without avail. The Committee in substance stated that it had not the desire, nor would it at all, aid or discourage tbe cause of anyone who aspired to the office of UnlteS Stales senator, or to any office, and that It had but one purpose and duty, and that was to elect the whole Republican ticket, both nationdl and state. That this committee had no favorites to rewsrd snd no enemies to punish; that party auccesa and an Impartial discharge of the trust committed to the committee by the Republicans f the state as their representative In conducting the campaign, were the exclusive objects of the committee. Complaint was also made that the senior senator was not consulted tn the appointment and organisation of this committee. Thereupon member of the committee at once offered to resign, that others to be selected by the senator might take their places. Sufficient members were willing to do this to give the senior senator an equal voice in the committee, but even Offers were made thia was declined. that the araior senator and his friend were privileged to select speakers for the campaign, and especially if it was desired, to select speakers who should accompany the nominee for governor oa the Republican tirket cm his tour of campaign. Every offer and inducement was made to them whereby they would have full voice in framing, conducting and controlling the policy of All these offers were the campaign. be-rau- aa rejected. The motive of the committee In thus attempting by concessions to secure the support of tbe senior senator, and that of the Tribune, for the ticket, was not because we admit that the proffered concessions of right belonged to thlm, but beeanae we felt that it was our duty aa Republic ass to leava no atona untuened to secure that entire harmony in the party in this stau which woald insure not only party auc-re(for we desire to say we do not entertain any fear that any disappointt ed or rejected candidate la able to the party of progress In thia state), but to he certain of a greater and enlarged Republican majority. To all of our overtures and suggestions the owners and managers of the Tribune turned a deaf ear.
