Fur a complete detailed statement for the manner in which the 29,000 received from Mr. Carnegie waa spent, we would respectfully Invite your attention to the report of our treasurer and secretary, which Is attached hereto and made a part hereof. This report shows that the cost of the building exceeded the limit fixed by the uinau sum of ,92.38. which will be conceded by those who have had experience with building to be very close estimating. We have received the sum of $930.75 In the way of gifts from our own citizens, but inasmuch as It was found necessary to expend for books the sum of $1,153.20, we were: unable to use any of the proceeds from these gifts for permanent improvements, but 011 rite contrary were compelled to use $222.45 of our maintenance money. In explanation of the $400 borrowed from the Ogden State bank, we beg leave to state that after the library was opened, we discovered the hours were such that It was necessary to have a janitor live in the building, anl thus the fitting up of rooms in the basement was necessitated. The permanent Improvements alluded to above and which were necessary to equip the library properly for its work, explain why It is that we were unable to keep within our income during the peat two years. These outlays will of course not have to be made again, but we would request your honorable body to make such a levy for the use of the library' for the coming year as will permit us to meet these extraordinary obligations already Incurred and put ua on such a footing as will enable ua in the future to live within our Income. For more detailed account of tlie actual workings of the library, we would respectfully Invite your attention to the annual report of our librarian, Miss Zoo E. Faddls, which la attached hereto and made a part here of. Thla report shows among other things that every book fn the library ,bas circulated on nn average almost ten time during the year, which la a phenomenal showing. For tha names of the persons to whom the various amounts denominated expenditures have been paid, see list of checks issued, hereto Attached and marked Schedule B.
