The men were engaged In y a drunken scuffle when Anderson flashed a knife and slashed his opponent a half dozen times before he could be restrained. The knife was drawn so quickly and unexpectedly that to moat of the onlookers Johnson waa bleeding copiously from several ugly wounds, before they knew what had happened, lire recipient of the Injuries was atruck across the head severing the temporal artery; hla left jaw waa laid open, ihe. gash reaching almost back to tbe juglar vein; and a very severe cut was Inflicted on the right hand; beside several minor cuts, particularly about tbe bead. In tbe excitement which followed, the assault, Anderson slipped quietly out of the back duor of the saloon. A call was telephoned from tha Assembly Club saloon and In fifteen minutes the assailant and victim were apprehended and were taken to the police station by Captain Brown and Merchants Patrolman Dan Sullivan. The principal offender was found hidden in a closet at the rear of the saloon with his hand euvered with blood, but no knife, and the victim was found at a lodging house across the street. The officers were unable to find the knife and Anderson dented having had a knife during the evening. Johnson was a mass of blood and was losing blood so rapidly when brought to the police station that Dr. Dickson was hurriedly called. Sxten-alv- e stitching was found necessary. The wounds are not now considered dangerous. The participants In the fight worked together for the Utah Construction company and last nights well nigh fatal episode seemed to be solely the result of whiskey and a disposition to quarrel. Yet the Union Suits are so elastic that there s perfect freedom and ease. Mark Brown assaulted Pierpont Her-ricjson of Officer Herrick, about 10 oclock last evening, by selling hia left ear with hia teeth, while ihe two were engaged in a fight, and mangling and shredding the latter in a frightful manner. The young men, according to their friends, had met by agreement street beat a a put on Twenty-fift- h tween Washington and Adams to fight out n grudge of several dayq standing, when without warning, Brown who la, it ia Mid, the much larger man, seized hla opponent and bit his car viciously several times. Tlie Sight waa of such a sickening natuie aa td be almost unendurable to several of the bystanders, and the shock and revulsion experienced by the vlciics was ao great that he fell into tbe arms of a friend who stood near. As soon as he had committed the deed, Brown, who perhaps realized the enormity of the offense, turned and fled percipitate-lstreet and has not np Twenty-fiftbeen seen in the business portion of town since. He waa not, however, followed. Young Herrick was hurried to Knoth' drug store following the affair, and arrived bleeding profusely and covered with blood. Dr. Gordon was summoned without delay and with' the assistance of several of Mr. Herrick's friends sewed the detached parts of the ear together. The ear waa entirely bitten through in several places and the lower part was almost bitten off. It waa found necessary to take at least six stitches to bring the parts together. Brown waa formerly an employee at Shoe store where the young Herrick at present works. According to friends Brown found young Herrick at the Utahn dance aud spoke about a settlement of the trouble between them. Herrick replied that he hRd been grossly insulted and that, there waa but one way to settle the affair. The opponents went to the sidewalk with their friends and began to fight with their fists when the icene before described accurred.
