Show 4- IttlL H - THE MORNING EXAMINER OGDEN, UTAH, STREET UNITED UTAH. OGDEN, MARKETS HE THE John E. Dooly .T7777! Horace E. Faery RallA E. Hoeg I PRICES MOVED UPWARDS IN THE OPENING DEALINGS IN STOCKS TODAY. So Long ac Money Ratea Remain Eaay Ther Seem Nothing That Can Disturb Speculative Confidence in the Prevent Market. l.-P- ricee Cashier POSITS. awduii moved dealing la upward in the opening uniform manstorks today in a fairly ner. Bui that was the last of uniforwere mity in the day's markrt. There desere and they sputa many strong efthe spreading in rotation, veloped aes-eithe through fect of the strength of the exchange, but the general list did not become animated at any time and the day's business was considavererably contracted from the recent featage. Some of the moat notable ures of recent advances were laggard or Inclined to sag on light offerings. As dullagainst the sharp spots but iaonly still unness and heaviness. There abated confidence that the tranquillity f the money market la not to be disturbed as the year end requirements, although it la commonly expected that rates will work aowewhat closer. So long aa money ratea remain easy there seems nothing that ran disturb speculative confidence in the present market. Thai was a revival of confidence that the Northern Securities decision was immediately Imminent but some uncerits tainty waa professed as to what character would be, so that this served to induce some heel tat ion rather than to stimulate speculation as baa usually been the case. The strength of St. Paul was generally attributed, however, to hope of any early decision of the securities case. The moat notable advances were divided between stocks of an extremely higher class and those f little tried and suspect ed Issues. This apparent annnamly la easier to understand when it ia considered that both cl awes of stocks are nkely to be sot widely distributed and in consequence easy to move. The Junior Vanderbilts were consplciona examples of the class today. A distinctly detected absorption fur Investment of this group of stocks is of greater sentimental effect on the market fur securities than almost any other act that could be named la the operations of the markadet For this reason a concerteddevice vance la the group la a favorite of the market leaden to help along the rest of the market by sympathy. The rapid manner la which these price were advaaced today was sufficient to mark the movement aa suspicious, the railroad Inventor, as has been truly observed, not following tbe manner of a bargain counter rush to secure Ms holdings. The rise In Amalgamated Copper waa baaed on rumors of an intended Increase in tbe dividend on one of Its subsidiary companies. Bail road earnings reported wore generally favorable. The conclusion of the lamdon Battlement occasioned a favorable Influence. December settlements here and the payments of a twenty million dollar installment on Southern Pacific stock Induced a firmer tune both for call and time Ioann But this waa not an effective Influence In tbe. stock market. The reactionary tendency became fairly general, however, late In the day and the closing waa weak and generally below last night's level of prices. Bonds were easier. Ill s l-- tion of Iron and steel in the United Slates, says tba Iron Trade Review, give a very strong tone to llie market. In the past week a further advance in Northern pig iron baa taken place and bar iron ia from $1 to $2 higher, while old material has advanced in all markets. While the number of pig iron buyers tbe past week wan small compared with that of a month or six weeks ago. they represented In not a few cases large consuming capacity, and tbe size of their purchases at the newly established level Indicates how unexpected the upturn waa, aa waa alaq to get successthe ability of fully higher prices in recent weeks. In the A large machinery Interest Pittsburg district has bought 12,000 tons at an advance over last weeks pries, and central western pipe works have taken 20,000 to 25.000 tons, some of this iron being on the basis of $15 at furnace for Northern No. 3. North era furnaces have all put up prices in the week, and at $16 now naked for No. 2 at Central Western furnaces, are in some markets on a parity with $13 Nol 2 Birmingham. Southern sellers who held for $13.60 are thus 50 cents above the northern price in many localities, but are nevertheless holding firm and Intimating that their price will be $14 in the near future. Bessemer Iron has advanced to $13.25 and $15.50 at central western furnaces, with fnrnaeemen lesa concerned than some months ago as to the future requirements of the nteel corporations. The latter ie starting these furnaces this week in addition to two last weeks. Coke prices continue to advance and a factor In the Con ijellsville market is a long time contract of the Lacks waun Steel Co., indicating that no large dependence will le put on Its own mines end ovens for many months. A steel bar meeting will occur early in December and an advance of $2 ton is a practical certainty. Plates and ehapex will C'lme up for consideration tbe mldJIe of December and an advance of $2 to $4 will probably be made in both. Bar iron has advanced $2 a ion further, and $1.55 Pittsburg Is now (be price of the leading producer. High scrap made the position of iron roll ing mills far from comfortable at the old price for their product which Among advances expected, may be effective by the time this review is read. Is one of $2 to $4 on wire goods and $2 a ton on wire nails. Another advance in merchant pipe is also looked for. 4 5-- 3 3 5-- 2 1-- 2 1-- 2 1-- 7-- sal-lett- 1-- 5-- 3 1-- 1-- 3 8 3-- 4 8 2 1-- 4 3 1-- 7-- 8 3-- 4 1-- 1-- 4 1-- 2 1-- 2 3-- 8-- 4 2 IA-b- 8-- 4 7 1 Omtihs, Dee. 1.
