Show a l 1 I I 1 NEW NEV RAILROADS WEST VEST OF OGDEN N Nto to I i l f The railroad map lately placed on the thc walls of the Weber club i a I outlining proposed roads to be b built by the Harriman system to the t I west of Ogden has traced on its It surface a cutoff from the old Car Carson I son Colorado narrow gauge beginning nning near Basalt on the Cali 1 I i boundary and running n northeasterly to t a cornea connee r I I tion with tho the Southern Pacific either at Battle Mountain Palisade I 1 or Elko Nevada Nevado Were such a line to be constructed d say 5 ay to t o Elko j I it would be a far more desirable short route to Southern California I than the San Sun Pedro as it would pass through a country where Wh ere some I t thing more than horned homed toads and lizards thrive and where the j I stretches of desert unlike the San Pedro wastes are here and there I L I relieved by an oasis a fertile valley and an wooded mountain range I I The map discloses the fact that half a dozen surveys have been I I made in Nevada from the Southern Pacific north into Oregon Two o 0 oI f I i I 1 It lines have been run from Wells one from Wells to Burley and an another another another other from Wells to Nampa Idaho There is a proposed line from Winnemucca through Paradise Valley Val Valley Valley ley to Weiser Idaho and one from Wadsworth north to Klamath Falls The road out of Wadsworth is to be built this winter the steel rails having been ordered delivered at Wadsworth by the head of officials officials officials of the Southern Pacific The proposed lines from Winnemucca and Wells no doubt are simply in the tho air and they may never be constructed but the sur survey survey m vey from Saline line to Rupert which is among the proposed roads given on the Weber club map is said to have been approved by Julius and will receive attention when the Harriman system re recovers recovers covers from its present fit of retrenchment The Oregon Short Line from Granger to Pocatello is said to be congested with traffic To relieve that undesirable condition it will be necessary to double track tr k the tho Union Pacific from Granger to Ogden and construct the Saline to Rupert cutoff and that is a move which cannot long be delayed without subjecting the management to criticism for failing to provide against blockades and interrupted traffic The Denver Rio Grande at a time when that road was sup supposed supposed posed to be burdened with a 3 debt beyond the ability of the system I Ito to sustain suddenly announces that its main line is to be double tracked into Ogden This rejuvenation of the old Gould line is some something something something I thing which prompts the question Is there new blood and new money in the road from over the mountains It further suggests I Ithe the query Is the Harriman system with its unsurpassed record of I achievement in improvements to allow itself to be displaced by the Denver Rio Grande Gronde at the most critical period in the affairs of western railroads j The Western W Pacific a Gould connection is bidding for Cali California I forma fornia and Oriental trade and is malting making odious odi us comparisons with the Southern Pacific and its connections inviting attention With the Western Pacific spreading out expanding growing owing and dial chal longing competition can the Harriman people afford to drop down from the high standard of expansion heretofore maintained and andL L r allow the Goulds Got ds to displace them first in aggressiveness and final ly in prestige and business One phase of this rivalry is not often touched upon because it is somewhat local The Gould roads have Salt Lake on one their main line and they are ore laboring for the of that city claiming that eventually they will profit most by everything which adds to Salt Lakes growth Paralleling the Gould Got d roads from 40 to 00 GO miles north are the tho Harriman roads with Ogden similarly situated as to those roads as is i 5 Salt Lake to the tho Gould GOl d lines hues The same argument applied to Ogden should shot d persuade the Harriman man people that by lending their support to the future greatness s of Ogden they will be serving their own interests to better advantage than by joining in boosting for the t territory which v must of necessity contribute most to Denver Rio Grande and Western Pacific Paci ic prosperity |
