Show fflht gang g unction. ISSUED - AX OKDINANCE wmie-'i- jfi.,$l The Junction Ptiatlna Association Monday O14 nUmded fwr fuhlieatum Evaxiica, Die. 13, 1880. PARTY EQUILIBRIUM . frid Some of our republic!! have allowed therr.ielves to be car rie-away by cerUin stupid new paper assertions about "the death blow" which democracy is alleged to Wt receiTed on the lecond of November last. This is an idle, a W DreaUmO tO vararv inninid 1 "o show with a few figures and fact from history. According to official reports of most atates and of the others, Garfield had rotes, while Hancock's ticket united 4,436,014, giving Garfield a plurality of 3,401, while he was 156,-88- 3 behind a majority of the total presidential vote cast, Or ;S12,6C5 nhort of a majority overall his eom - emi-ffici- al petitors. Comparing these figures with thee of the previous presidential elections we find: 1868 1872 1876 1880 2,703,600 dems., " 2,864,384 " 4,285,590 " 4,436,014 The vote of 1864 is 3,015,188 3,596,742 4,033,695 4,439,415 reps. ", " " Irrelevant in connection as a number of states did not participate in it. Only in the last two elections the' democratic party has brought out her full numer! ical strength and all further corns parisons would, therefore, be useless. From the figures of 1876 and 1880 we learn indeed that both parties have increased their number, the republicans more than the democrats. The democrats have lost their "centennial" majority of over a quarter of a million and have even - run behind the republicans to the amount of 3,400. Although Garfield may be considered the president elect of minority of the American people, this can afford the democrats little consolation, especially in consideration of the fact that the gains have mainly been on the ' eide of the republicans. total the as this it be may, Still, result shows irrefutably that the two old parties are still keeping each other at bay and in almost even balance. A few thousand votes gave the decision we have got no less an authority for this than W. G. Curtis, of Harptr't WetMy, who attributes Garfield's victory to the action of the independent voters of New York. A few states in the north show a decided preponderance of the republican vote; a few southern states ex exhibit the prevalence of democratic tendencies; but, as a rule, the par ties have come out pretty evenly matched and the talk by republican stalwarts and official "stalKwards" about a "sweeping republican tidal wave" are mere bosh. The gigantic majorities anticipated from several states shrunk down by the thousands when it came to official counting and and states like Indiana even retrieved a goodly portion of the ground lost in October. But we are not so much endeavoring .to' calculate on the events and possibilities of the past as on the issues and realities of the future. It is a fact thai the two parties which measured arms on the first Tuesday in November last, are still arrayed in full rank and file. Their continuance is necessary to the pub lie weal, as they represent respectively the enlargement and the re striction of federal government. Those two tendencies are as access sary for the equilibrium of the body politic of the United States as the mutual union and reaction of eentri fugal and centripetal forces are in the solar system. Fanatical bloody shirt republicans and "hard shell" democrats may not realize it; but it is nevertheless a fact that the good fortune of the- - commonwealth depends of an in teraction of these two opposing elements. At present the partv of centralization seems to be in the ascendant, but as Goethe ssy, 'It his been provided that the trees don't grow too high into heaven," and thus the oentralking tendencies will find a natural check."-- We cat not, at the same time; nave a 'strong 'goveronient", and ' freedom, neither 'Ought tbeelfare ef the republic be staked upon the precarious maintenance oT a frail equilibrium of political parties. It is time, high time, for th people to realize this, else the destioje of the nation will pass from under'the control of the sovereign people into the hands of that set or garjg of politicians who know the best ray to pull the wires or "grease the wheels" of the political machinery. In our republic, like in all organisms, things should move according to Tope's recipe. ! well-ordere- d "AH In eisel proper 1 1 t '.be stste; Xotbing to add ana authiny to a tale.'
