At the opening of our national legislature, both house? presented a nearly full representa tion, and the inauguration passed without any startling incident bad A tho House of Representative Dot to elect a speaker this time, and as the appointment of the various business committees was about set tied, there existed in neither branch ny' impedimnt to proceeding to earnest legislative work. All the Washington correspond entsofthe New York papers agree in the opinion that, for awhile at least, the members of the two great national parties intend to avoid m much an possible, all violent party discussions and sectional animosities, and to devote their time and attention to the speedy liquidation of iu porUnt economical and sdministra Th tive questions. We cannot, however, feel a full confidence in those anguine expec tations. We do not deem it likely that in a session like this, which precedes a presidential election, the politicians on the right or on the left will refrain from speculations, schemes, and preparations for thi election. It is scarcely to bo avoid ed that the extreme wings of both parties will again come into vehement collision, and neglect the true interests of the country for the satisfaction of their campaign projects and deeigns. W e should be very much pleased if our apprehensions should prove unfounded; but we have little hope of enjoying this patriotic pleas- ure. According to present reports the Republicans intend to maintain a conservative and passive position, and only to defend their points gained in the lastsesiion against any Democratic aggressions. It is believed that the Republican party presents a more united front on the important questions of the national finanees, than does the De mocratic party. Nevertheless, it cannot bo concealed that it is still divided into two camps, whose views, if not diametrically opposed to each other, are yot as different from each other es those of Mr" t, Uye and the celebrated Mr. Thurraan. The Western Republicans are leaning toward tho view that it is not desirable that iu this session any decisive legislative steps be taken with regard to the financial riddle of the Sphinx; they are rather in fuvor of adjourning the settlement of this delicate question till after the presidential election; at most they would accede to the measures recommended by John Sherman. The Demo cats, however, have been anxious ever since their parliamentary defeats in the extra session, to declare that they will keep their wild men, their 'Tercy Hotspurs," in the back ground, and that they do not intend to waste any time on purely political discussions. But while the moderate f.nd considerate men amongst them stick to this resolution, while they attempt to lift a man like Bayard to the position of a Democratic leader and a chief adviser, and while they are determined to ridtuemselves in political questions of the hegemony of the Southern Bourbons, Blackburn and Lis ilk, and thus hope to restrict in financial questions the influence of Warner and consort, the success of all these laudable endeavors appears rather doubtful. In both houses of Congrees there are pending be-- 1 Rides thecew projects and bills such a number of unsettled affairs, that our legislature would have plenty to do if they mean"bujiness." Amongst the most important bills we notice an amendment of the navigation aats,by which the purchase of foreign, built ships is permitted; furthermore, reconsideration of the Alabama indemnity claims; regulation of the inter state railroad laws; commercial treaty with France; repeal of ceriaii land grants to railroads; reorganization of the army, and many other bills. Moreover, it is to be expected that besides the proposition of Mr. Wood, with respect to alterations in the tariff, which are now before the committee on ways and means, othcr bills will be brought n proposing reductions or increases in the present tariff rates, and changes in the manlier of their collection. All thfso projects and propositions, "bills and acts, however defective they tnay bo in detail, bring up questions ef such great economical import, &nd t'tk development and prosperity Most finance-equilibris- The v !.: Uiry (jail House, Louisville. tum-ach- , lia, Jludienepolis Nsas .) of The presence in the city the remains of General Jeff C. Davin, ono of the best soldier contributed by Indiana to the war of the Union, recalls the event which sent his nam flashing over the wires to all part of the country on the 20th of .September, 18C2 the shooting of Major General William Nelson in thecorri dor of the Glt House, that morning. A full and true statement of the oauses leading to tho tragic occurrence, and the intense provocation under which it was committed, has never been published, and this is a fitting occasion for relating the cirto-J.t- y cumstances. Gen. Nelson was one the handsomest and most imposing men in the army, and a courageous soldier, but possessed of an irritable disposition and an ungovernable temper, which led him to abuse and curse those who offended Lira in a most insulting and degrading man ner. This incident will illustrate his character. He offered Carter HarrN son, present Mayor of Chicago, a po sition on his staff and reqnented him to report. Harrison arrived at head quarters after night. Juntas became up, Uen.eison was oraenng an aiu to conve y a message to another General in the corps. The night was dark, the way fed through fieldI covered with stumps, and the ai suid: '"Why, General, I cannot get I will break my neck there on a stump.' lo wbicn kelson tru tally responded : "ureaK ona d d d; I can appoint another in the he morning." Mr. Harrison would not accept the offer of the po sition and retired. Nelson and Davis had met in Charleston, while the former was in t he navy and the latter stationed at Fort Sumter, and had became warm friends. Shortly after the war broke out Nelson was given a command in the army by President Lincoln and stationed in Kentucky. He came of utiold Kentucky family, and his ap pointment wos popularly supposed to be due to the desiro of the Presi dent to do what he could to secure the influence of bis relations in be- hal'of theUnion cause. The two met on thefiel I in front of Corinth, where warm, mutual expressions of friendship and delight at the meeting were indulged in. After the surrender of Corinth den. Davis axked and whs granted leave of absence by General Uoxencrans, for himself and a son of John I.Morrison, a volunteer aid on his staff, and he returned lo his home in Clark county. In the meantime ol iid GKNR3AL NELSON IUD BKEX DEFEATED in the battle of Richmond, where, in his anger at the action of soldo raw recruits from Indiana, without considering that it was their first action, it is said he struck them with his sword.
