Yesterday he was perceived by the Marshal peddling Ids wares, and as that officer had not seen him make any sale, and in order to make sure before he, made any arrest, purchased a chromo for the sum of 75 cents, and in his presence a Chinaman bought another for a dollar. This was sufficient evidence, and the supposed deaf mute was informed that he was under arrest for peddling without a license. lie inquired how much the cast of a license would be, and was verbally told fifteen dollars. This was a sudden shock for the poor fellow, so severe indeed that it restored to him his hearing, for he heard that very well, and repeated with surprise, ''iilteen dollars!" but he very soon came to his senses again and accordingly lost his hearing. lie was taken before Justice Logan, and while in the court the Chinaman to whom he had sold a chrcftno entered, and he thought was brought as evidence against him. lie was told, however, that such was not the case, but the Chinaman was interested in a murder case. Here he again foi-ghimself and answered and asked questions as though he heard and understood as well as any one. Discovering that the cat was out of the bag, and having paid his fine of $1 5, he mounted his horse and started out in search of fresh world to conquer.
