AT From the report of a lecture by Theodore Tilton, in Chicago, given in the Times of that city, we extract the following: The human mind is the master piece of God's workmanship. How can we best duvelop it and bring its energies to the noblest use ? The usual answer is, "Take the child and send to school, and then to college," as if that were all. I have traveled West and seen the Western passion for schools and school bouses. At Onaha, on a commanding eminence, is a school building that surpasses any in New York, Boston or Phila delphia. As out on the ocean I have observed a white speck above the horizon, aud on inquiry have learned that it was a sail, aud ihat preseutly the hull of a vessel would rise to view, so in traveling over the western prairies I have here and there discerned in the distance the dome of a costly school house, even before the spire of the village church was to be seen. Where the best warehouse in these towns cos perhaps $5,000, and the best church $10,000, the school bouse bad cost $100,000. Say, if you please, that the school house is the chief glory of a town, and that it is doing more good than any palace iu Europe, aud I will agree with you. I never saw one that was too good. When the Duke of Wellington was approaching his dissolution, he called t his attend ants and ordered them to put him on his horse and take hint back to the Eton school. His order was obeyed, and as he saw the venerable pile, he pointed his bony tiogsr toward it and triumphantly exclaimed: "It was there 1 wen the battle ot Waterloo!" Fifty years benee the child re d of today will point to their school houses aod sav that it was there they won the battle of We. . I agree with you that these schools are all important, but over against them I would set up a warning. J have discovered that the popular no tion of education is something like this : lit re is a crxruuui and there is a library. Transfer the library to the cranium, and the work is done. What lollows trom thisf fhe error in intellectual education consists ia, making it too exclusively intellectual. To stuiy is good, but after learning the books the child ahoild be taught Bacon's maxim, "Studies teach not their own use." Coleridge teaches the best method when he says, "A single hour spent in solitude in struggling with and in conquest over a single bosom sin will produce more intellectual culture than a, whole year's study in the schools without." This should be written over the entrance of every Intellectual school house. vigor moral of pomes only inspiration. As the body needs breath, so the mind, which is au organism parallel after it, needs the "divine afflaius" of the Holy Ghost call it what you will. Good acts and lives shine through the face. If the moral nature has power to chauge the face, how much more to change tha mind? Homer say no wicked man was ever wise. We live in an age where everything is mixed with brains. It is high time now that brains themselves should be mixed with morals. I say this in the interest of intellectuality, although that is by no means the greater interest. Sinco moral virtues become intellectual forces, the best thing to do is to take care of our morals if only for the benefit of our minds. 11 uorres-ponde- W -- JO tot curing-efor- EAIED i PROPOSALS FOR JOINER AND Plaster work, and Pitinting to be doneon the County Court House, according to plans and specificatioui for the sums, will lis received at the Clerk's Office, ou Wednesday, the U6ih Count inst. It is the mere cutting edge of the ax, to which the W ; r i 1H7G. that frighten men out of their wits,1 originated in corrupt bodies. Headache is of the devil, and dyspepsia is of tell. It takes a sound body to make a sound mind. Work is not vulgar. So long as the brain needs the juices of the body, so long will hard work be the fundamental ele ment in the development of the mind. Business is eminently fit for a man of genius, and to earn a livelihood is the best way to sharpen one's wits. ine lcfiuonce of the moral nature is to stimulate the intellectual faculties. God. made the moral faculties to stand in excess over the intellectual. This is shown bv the fact that the majority of men arc not capable of protouud reasoning processes, although capable ot profound moral influences. While but few understand tha 12 nrr.hlpma nf Euclid, all understand the 12 beati tudes from the Sermon on the Mount. Why is it that the moral faculties seep a limitless horizon, while the intellectual are bounded by small circlet Because they were created for a supreme end. They are supplemental to the intellectual; they are th higher reason.
