A mother, urged poignant grief and painful suspense at the absence of a son, from whom she hat not heard fer almost a year, writes to the Postmaster, from in words of despair, Philadelphia, thinking that he was in Ogden, she wrote to him, but he could give her no favorable intelligence. Mr J. C. Lee arrived in this city lst night direct from Cayenne, French Guiana. He is an experienced miner, and has examined the mines in that region. The quality and extent of the mines are not as good or great as represented, the gravel averaging from four to six inches deep, and from twelve inches to four feet stripping. The people of the country working there in the mines barely pay It has been stated that these expenses. mines were new, as an inducement to emigrate thither, but on the contrary they have been worked for more than twenty years, and in but few instances have they been remunerative. All the modern conveniences have been applied to their development, excepting hy. draulie arrangements, tbe ground being too fiat to make their introduction feasible. It is not advisable for those who are not accustomed to a warm climate to venture there. The mines are worked principally by natives and East India-mewho have become acclimated, and run but little risk from exposure to the debilitating influences ef the climate. The cost of living is as great as it is in this country, about $1.20 per day, and the diet peculiar to the country, consisting only of tropical fruit. About nine months in the year copious rains fall continuously, and during tbe other three months sickness prevails to a great extent. Those who may contemplate visiting this El Dorado, had better make up their minds te take at least $1,000, so that they may pay their way back, after paying dearly for their experience.
