Letter From IV. Ceddes From Millennial Star. Weymouth, January 13, 1874. Prest. L. J. Herrick. Dear Brother: The "Syphrenes" left London (with your humble servant on board) on Saturday, the tenth inst. We were under the necessity of coming into harbor at this place, in consequence of a very sad circumstance having occurred immediately after we put to sea. The captain of the vessel committed suicide, by jumping overboard. The cause of his doing so is not known, timber than that he had had some difficulty with the owners of the ship. He appeared to have been very much liked and. judging by what I bad seen of him, I took him to be a fine man. We are expecting a Mr. Wood, from Scotlaud, to take the at seven command. We sail o'clock. There are 25 cabin passengers oa board, alt of whom appear to be very nice people. Tbey call me the "American gentleman," and do not sees to hide their good opinion of me; but when they learn that I am a "Mormon" and going to Australia to preach the doctrines ef that "peculiar people," some, if not all, may change their present good opinion. 1 shall endeavor to make friends witb all on board, and if the Lord wills it, I shall preach the Gospel to them. There is a "reverend" among'the passengers, but the people on board do not appear to like him. Ihe "revernd ' and myself, however, are on the best of terms. Good night and God bless you. She nursed him when sick, paid his bills, and buried him respectably when he died, asking no help from his relatives. . He left no children and made no will, and Dorcas, being ignorant of law as it affects married women and widows, supposed that the home was hers because she had paid for it with her own earnings. So she kept right on making coats and garments like Dorcas of old; happy, no doubt, in " the good work and which she did. But this state ef things could not last. The two brothers of her dead husband 6oon began to exercise their control over her, as in duty bound. The woman must be protected (?) if not by her husband then by his nearest male relative. So Dorcas received notice that she could only have her "right of dower" in the little home. . " "the "The use. of widow's encumbrance?" Now Dor cas was only an ignorant woman and could not understand the justice of a of law which could take her earnings from her and give them t relatives of her husband. So she refused to take any legal action in the matter, but as time passed on, the brothers made it so uncomfortable for her that she dared not live in the housa. But still disdaiBing to recognize the law which men had made to suit themselves, she set fire to her home and hurried it down. She said "If I cannot have it, they shall not."
