THE PUREST STOCK la New Orleans lately appeared to Police Sergeant Gaster one John Cleveland, a maa of sorrowful mein, with the- recital of & tale of woe bo painful that the gay and festive Gaster, all used aa he has been to the bitter experiences of humanity, shuddered to think that mortals could be brought to face such stern, dread fate and live. According to the man's story, he once lived and loved in a pleasant village in the fetate of Kansas, where, Boothed and sustained by the affectionate care of a buxom wife, he daily plied the exhilarating, if not exciting, pursuits of the photographer's art, and thus with the energies and vigor that ever spring from an atmosphere of domestio happiness, he gracefully and picturesquely turned out counterfeit presentments, to the delight and gratification if all the rural residents for miles ' and miles around. While Phyllis, the partner of his joys, plied her busy household cares to the music of her cheerful songs, and all went as merry as the typical marriage bell, as if to cap the climax of joy, the home circle was, in the course of time, beautified and cheered by the appearance of solid pledges of affection in the shapes of bouncing twins. Poets have, upon divers and sundry occasions, taken pains to remark that the sweets of life were born to die only when they were sweetest. This theory, unhappily, found ample justification in the present instance; and fate, as if to eay that human happiness must not continue to such rounded perfection, as here existed, interposed its stern ukase in the form of a dashing young swell from Chicago, who, taking in the- beautiful Kansas village, on a rambling tour, tarried there a brief seasonr and as luck would have it, sought and obtained a temporrary home in the photographer's mansion, conditioned upon the weekly disbursement of filthy lucre. JWith an eye for the beautiful in nature, and a heart trained to love, the Chicago boy soon fell a victim to the winning graces of his hostess, and a genial acquaintance ripened into ardent love. While the husband took pictures for the rustics, his- wife and h's guest improved the shining hours of companionship, until she, regardless alike of the claims of the twins, and fealty to her lord; tore her heart's affections from their moorings tad gave their sacred treasures to the insidious swell from the Garden City.. Their guilty love, although hid from the eyes of the author of the twins, flourished and grew amazingly, until its boldness opened the eyes of him whose honor was thus sacrificed and determination following suspicion, he watched and waited until is time he caught the pair in such gentle dalliance that further doubt was out of the question, when, goaded to frenzy, he hauled forth his trusty derringer and straightway emptied its contents into the young man from Chicago. For this he was at onoe captured i. by the min:ons of the law and placed iu durance vile, where for weary weeks he languished in unhappy disA tress. Meanwhile the wounded Lothario, nursed and soothed by the partner of Kis sin, recovered and lo,. they rose up one day and shaking the dust of the village from theie feet, took the twins and fled. . .,.: , ... Released at last from- Umbo, about two weeks ago the husband faced the wreck of his life with bitter determination concerning the twins, and although he had cast from his heart the woman who had crushed it,' he could not give up the innocents, and away he sped on . the track of the guilty pair. The trail led him to Bhreveport, but there it yanished.and after fruitless e Torts to regain it he came on to New Orleans in desperate hope, that 'they 'might' have drifted t CHILD CO.
