Patrick Kane, an Irish, lad of fifteen years, had $47 ia a little red which was inside of his pocket-booand with this he had earpet-baresolved to go back to Ireland, if he could find a ship to take that as part pay, and his work curing the royage the other part. Ho had just become acquainted with Patrick Stack, an ether Irish boy of about his own age, and Stack advised him to try his luck in New York a little longer. But Kane was homesick, and went to the whart with his iriena fctact to see MAIN, STREET, about his passage. Stack sometimes relieved his friend of his carpet-ba- g by carrying it for him, and holding it while Kane went aboard vessels The boys lost one another somehow, and this happened while Stack had . ivane charge of Kane s carpet-bagwent to a police station in his distress .and told his story how his carpet-bawere gone and little red pocket-boo- k with Stack. The next day an officer went with Kane to the pier where Kane had lost sight of Stack, and there was Stack himself looking for Kane. Stack told Kane where he had for safety, and the put the carpet-ba- g officer and the two boys went to the was indeed place. The carpet-bathere in a cigar store but it had been forced open and the little red was gone. Stack was pocket-boo- k charged with the theft- - The told .their story to the court two- boys . and iurv. 15oth boys looked and talk ed honest, and Kane seemed still to have confidence in his friend. The jury took the case, and brought in a remarkable verdict. It is probably the only one of its kind on record. "We find the prisoner not guilty, but we have raised among ourselves $32 The to give to the complainant." judge then said he would give $15 to the complainant,, and thus the $47 was made up. The lawyers caught the spirit which had movtd the jury, and Patrick Kane walked out of that court-roowith $65 in his little red pocket-booand Patrick Stack went free. The' prisoner got the benefit of the doubt. If he did steal the money, may be that lesson of justice and mercy will bo of more benefit to him than imprisonment. Four Doors GENERAL DEALER IN BOOTS k, Mr. Ilenry Knack and hia wife, Lena Knack, of Walcott, Iowa, suffered a loss of fifty dollars in money in March, 1872. The money disappeared from their house in some mysterious manner and they believed it was stolen. They had no clue to the thief did not care much for the woney, but they felt a very natural desire to know who took it. An old woman of their acquaintance told the mystery. It was to take an old family Bible and an old key and place the key between the leaves of the book so that the entire ring of the key would extend above the end of the book when closed. The book was then to be tied around the cover with a handkerchief, at its centre. Then two persons were to hold the key at the ends of the index fingers of their right hands, then th9 names of the people in the neighborhood were to be spoken in the presence of charm was, the , The that when the name of any party was spoken the book would drop to the floor. Mr. and Mrs. Knack had not much faith in the charm, but they tried it for amusement. The book fell when the name of Jacob Batcher was pronounced., It was tried several times, with the same result. The oracle was thus consulted at various times and places, and before many people of the nighborhood, always giving the same answer. And people began to talk about Jacob Batcher a manner not at all pleasant or complimentary to him. In fact some of them regarded him as a thief, and avoided him. He could not Btand such superstitious vagaries and insidious insinuations any longer, and h Bued Mr. and Mrs. Knack for slander before a court of justice of the county and state aforesaid, claiming damages in the sum of , $500 for defamation of character. There was a tedious trial, and a good deal of fun, and much interest was worked up, and the verdict came after a long deliberation of the jury. It was for the defendants, and judgment was accordingly rendered for the defendants for costs. This is probably a little the queerest slander suit on record. The Knacks have a knack of finding out thieves which might be made available by adoption as a part of the detective system. Large Assortment of For Gents, Ladies or Misses wear. IN A a specl 1M G.
