With this number the JCNCTION its second volume aa a daily paper. We look back upon the past year's labor and its result with a great dial of satisfac tion. enters upou paper was Feeling that a insufficient to meet the requirements of a railroad and agricultural centre like Ogden, and that our enterprising citizens would support a further effort to give character and importance to this city and couuty, w ventured upon the publication of a daily ncwi paper, continuing our for tho benefit of settlements not semi-weekl- y semi-weekl- y favored with a daily mail. We have not been disappointed. Our leading business men have availed themselves of our advertising columns, and our principal citizens have sustained the paper by subscription. Still we might have received greater support. If it had not been for Salt Lake and other cities apart from Ogden, our effort for tho advancement of this city would have been vaiik 15ut by liberal subscriptother placions- aud advertiseiu-entes have shown their appreciation of the Junction, assisting us and help, ing themselves at the same time. Wo feel greatly encouraged in entering upon our second volume. We are thankful to all in every place, who have aided us in our labor i for the public good, and believing tliat the Junction will receive, as it has from tho first day of publication till the present, increased appreciation and support, wo look forward to a future, bright with promise of material profit and opportunities for usefulness. s. semi-week- ly . Culm After the Storm. There is a temporary lull in the storm that has, within a few hours, prostrated some of the most substantial houses in the country, and probably wrecked the fortuues of thousands. Among tho debris of the nion-ie- d institutions that lately were supposed to be impervious to the vicissitudes and mutations of varying o is rife as to the speculation causes which led to the untimely catastrophe which swept out of existence names that yesterday commanded tho confidence of the world. Naturally every effort has been and will be made to appease the agtatiau of an and anxious people. he made to buoy will exertion Every up the courago of tho commercial classes and infuse confidence among tnose who haue withstood the blasts that laid low houses which were supposed to be as solid as adamant. for-tun- over-excite- d Already it is proclaimed that the panic was but a fancy stosk flurry, aud that the mercantile integrity of the metropolis remains unimpaired, as if it were..possible that the of a score or more of gigantic firms and the sacrifice of tens of millions of capital could fail to affect the commercial iuterests of .the entire nation." Jay Cooke, too. must pay the penalty of failure. Erewhile he was a monarch in the financial world, lie swayed an influence that was felt in two hemispheres ; he received the adulation and homajre which are ever paid to power. Now there are "none so poor as to do him reverence." It is suddenly discovered that he was but an obscure ba.ikcr in Washin'on ffbca Secre tary Chase picked him up to float the United States securities at home and abroad. He is stigmatized as a fancy stock operator, and even the New York Times, the leading Administration organ, chimes in with its contemporaries in attributing the calamity that has befallen Wall Street to the fancy stock mania spread by one who for a decade has been considered a pillar of the National Treasury. There is no doubt that the stock gambling and railroad speculations were the immediate occasion of the crisis, and in that respect it may be called a fancy stock panic. But when it is asserted that the credit and character of tho merchants of New York are intact, it is, we believe, only aa idle, perhaps a criminal effort to impart unsubstantial consolation in this hour of tribulation. Comracace in New York, and perhaps we are safe in saying in all our large cities, has become tainted with the miasma that poisons the very fountains of our prosperity. The dosire to accumulate fortune rapidly, tho eagerness to acquire wealth through adventitious aids, and the passion for gain by whatever means, have made the commercial classes of tho country rapacious and sordid. The increase was longer postponed till after stock-takin- n legitimate commerce is no landtrodden. The marks in our histary have been swept away, and a higher code of morals, which once prevailed, is supplanted by a wild spirit of speculation which finds its votaries in almost every counting room in the country. If, as is alleged, the crisis is a fancy stock affair, a very serious consideration arises. Jay Cooke &, Co. were acting as fiduciary agents of the Government. Necessarily the national credit must be depreciated in foreign markets, and our securities greatly affected, at a time when all the resources of the country will be called into requisition to relieve the stringency which exists. Perhaps this is not to be deplored, and may prove to be a blessing, as it may suggest the necessity of and contraction. It is not wise to conceal the truth even amid danger. The nation is diseased. It requires purgation, and demands radical remedies. The moral atmosphere must be purified, and all the energies of the nation should be directed towards eradicating the evils that infect the body politic and penetrate the innermost recesses of time-honore- paper mill, wg caught in the machinery last Saturday morning, and btifore he could be extricated his arm was nericut ly burned. McKinney has been acquitted on the first ballot by the jury who tried the case. A general feeling of regret is expressed that the jury should turn him loose on an already grossly outraged community. The rapid conviction and sentencing of so many murderers of late had lid us to hope that a new era of justice and protection to life had dawned upon us. The finding of this jury dispels the illusion.
