It appears that sotn9 tima previous to the killing, Mason aud Johnson had been engaged in a poker game, at the conclusion of which the former was indebted to the dol latter in the sum of twenty-sirehad he which or neglected tvs, fused to pay, and which is the only cause that can hi assigned for the murder. Mason was engaged at Hicks' station taking care of the stage stock and Johnson was employed in the same capacity at the next station be yond. Last Thursday, upon the ar rival of the Eureka-bounstage from Tyb Johnson announced his intention of visiting Hicks' for the purpose of enforcing the payment of the 2G which he claimed from Mason, at the same time exhibiting a large sized, old fashioned English derringer, which he had caused to be load ed for that purpose. While on the stage he intimated to Jack Carver, the drivtr, his intention of taking Mason's life, unless he paid him the money, and, taking the weapon from the breast pocket of his coat, placed it in his pants pucket, and remarked that 'when men are quarreling they generally have their hau'ds in their pnekets," and other liaguage of the same purport. Shorily afier the arrival of the stage at Hicks, Johoson and Mason bad a conversation, to hare been of a particularly acrimonious character, after which Mason went.iuto the house to diuner. After taking h is meal he came out and was approac'iiug the coach when be wa met by Johnson, who aimed his pistol at him and said : ' You son of a' , if you don't pay rue that money, I'll kill you right here I" Mason begged him not to shoot, saying he would py him, and asked Ilicks, who was standing by, to give Johu son $20 for him, which Hicks said he would do, and was in the act ol taking the coin from his pocket for that purpose, when Johnson dodged armnd him and startei with the pistol in bis hand after Masou, who retreated into t he house, where he got and coming out, walka ed towards Johnsou, whom he told to throw down his weapon. At that instant Johnson raised his pistol aud fired. His victim threw up his arms, one of the chambers of his revolver explodiug at the same time, aod ut tering a single groan, fell to the ground shot through the heart. Upon the completion of his bloody work, the murderer turned to Mr. Ilicks and demanded the money which he had promised him, and upon receiving it started off as fast as he could go afoot. As soon as they had ascertained that Mason was beyond the reach of hnman aid and they had partially recovered from the shock 7 occasioned by the tragical event, Messrs. Hicks and Carver armed themselves and taking horses started in pursuit of the murderer, whom they overtook about a mile He was ihen unfrom the house. armed aud surrendered without le sistance. Tbey took him back to the station, and after confining his hands and feet' with ropes, placed him on board the stage aud brought him into town and delivered him over,, to Sheriff Gilmore, in whose at present. The custody he same conveyance also brought in the body' of the" murdered" man, whose funeral took 'place yesterday afternoon from Haskell .Company's unt- mains therooms, dertaking being followed to their las' resting place by a large concourse t citizens. 'Coroner Williams held ad inquest upon the body y sterday forenoon, w hen, a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts. It is reporte i to measure at least eight inches more in circum'fyreuce than the Monrecito vine; that it is in a healthy condition, and filled with tons of ripe fruit. It spreads over a vast ajea of, ground, and under its branches all the beasts of the forest, large and small, congregate. It is said it has grown from a cutting' of the San Marcos vines, taken there by about fifty years ago. The place became entirely deserted and the vine neglected. A number of citizens of Santa Barbara will go aut under the guidance of the discoverer to examine it and to clear away tho brush, and to return with accurate details of its size, etc. u, r. a.
